Best laptop purchase for 2010 college student?

pat

I am going to be a freshman at ISU starting in the fall. I am a criminal justice major and want to know what kinds of laptops are the best for college students. HP, asus, toshiba....?

Answer
A basic laptop may be good for you, but it depends on what software you will be using. and How much power you need.
What is you Price range?
What will you be doing? Internet surfing? Math and word Processing/ PowerPoint? Or intensive audio and Video production? Games (this may be your hobby outside of school)
Will you be using this as a desktop replacement or will you be away from your dwelling often? This may determine the battery life you need. If you are going to be out and about often, get a long lasting battery.

There is no best brand, But I would say stay away from HP and Compaq laptops, unless you buy a good warranty. Go for Asus, Sony or Toshiba

Make sure you pay close attention to the specifications of your laptop.

Minimum requirements I recommend

Dual core CPU 2.0Ghz
2 Gb RAM
Hard Drive Space Minimum 160 Gb, 7200 RPM

I don't know if you care about this but Macs are nice machines and are also status symbols. If you care about appearances you may consider a MAC. if not, get a Windows PC.

Ok, here's what I'm looking for and needing help with. I'm going to an Art College this winter quarter (2010) and plan on getting a new laptop to help with my studies. I want one that has a great graphics card, lots of memory, and a good hard drive. I'm interested in a 17" screen and would like one with a camera already connected to the screen. I'm also wanting one that has windows 7. Now here is my question, can anyone out there tell me what brand, name, or model laptop I should get? I also would like one that is under 900 dollars if possible. Thank you!

Answer
Mac book pro, great graphics for art students! Only downfall is that do not believe you will be able to pick one up for less than 1200 or so. But it may be better to consider this than to pick one up that may not completely serve your purpose. Also, recommend asking faculty in your art program, I would bet they would also say that a Mac book pro is the way to go! I have friends who went to Pratt Institute and the Mac is a wonderful machine for Artists. Good Luck with your studies.
