What brand laptop should I get for university?

Stark

I am going to be doing chemistry/pre-pharmacy.

I will need it for powerpoints, word documents, saving pictures, streaming videos from netflix + youtube.

I will be using instant messenger and e-mailing.

It needs to have a cd/dvd drive.

Suggestions for a college laptop?

Lauren

I'm going to a large university in the fall, and I'm looking to buy a new laptop.
-I have never owned one before and I've also never used a Mac before. I'd be open to the possibility though, after all I have the whole summer to learn how to use one.
-I'm not a gamer.
-I'm a pharmacy major so I'll mostly be using this laptop for research, taking notes, papers, and social networking.
-I'd really prefer for this laptop to have a nice webcam; I'd be using it a lot.
-My budget is definitely in the $500-$1000 range. I can't imagine spending more than $1000 unless I'd find student discounts, which I know Apple has an $100 discount, I'll have to check other companies and my school's policy.
-I'm not a big computer person (which is why I need opinions), but I do know how to fix things as much as the average teenager who has grown up around computers does. I definitely won't be doing much tweaking to this laptop though.
-Weight of it isn't that much of an issue, but the campus is one of the largest, so I'd probably prefer on the lighter side.
I'm asking everyone because I'd like to know real people's opinions, not just top ten lists that websites and companies put out, even if they have merit. Thank you!
I almost forgot to mention that I won't be buying this laptop online. My area is limited to stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, etc.

for what you need it for, you dont need that powerful a notebook, any laptop can run office, run a webcam(whether its built in or external), download music, use facebook, and you would be hard pressed to find a new laptop without high definition graphics now. so you want a laptop that runs cool(the more energy a laptop uses the hotter it gets, the more wear and tear on your laptop and there fore it has a shorter life), has decent graphics and a longer battery life. other may advise you to get more powerful laptops but then you you buy what you dont need and run into shorter battery life, heavier to carry around campus, and other issues. i found one on walmart that you can have sent to your store free. this laptop offers you these advantages in exchange for a less powerful processor. it comes with a good webcam, a 15.6 inch screen( the average screen in a laptop), a dvd writer in case you need it, 3 gb of RAM, and lightweight. RAM is like your conscious, the more you have the more programs you can run at once. since you are not a power user, 3 gb is plenty. here is the link
