Computer TECHS HELP!!! NO DESKTOP may be VIRUS? Need answers/solutions or suggestions?
Ok... well lets start out my laptop is an Acer Travelmate 2480 with Windows XP... It has been wonderful to me and I love it to death... which I am thinking is now. I am not a computer genius but am above average smarts with them.
Laptop has worked great until today, the only suspicious thing was a program had popped up today that was not to my knowledge installed, once is said RISKS NEED REMOVED and a bunch of fake looking risks on a program that even popped an icon on the desktop i believe it was called Doctoral Diagnosis? I am NOT SURE OF THE NAME, but was something of the sort... I believe it WAS A VIRUS as I have manually removed one like this before about 8 months ago. Well anyways... we left our home, I left it on, came back and it was all frozen... so I held the power button down.... waited and restarted.
Ok now THE PROBLEM... it boots up and starts... has white normal screen with maker, and says press F2 for menu --- LIKE ALWAYS... then quickly it usually goes to load the desktop.
NOW IT STAYS BLACK.. and WILL NOT LOAD ANYTHING! If I even tap the power button it goes right OFF... which ussually you would have to hold it down... and well it does this everytime and I can not get my desktop... only BLACK
ANY HELP PLEASEEE ... im an ONLINE college student and need this thing back up running!!! ASAP.... and unfortunately NO... i do not have any boot or Window disks..... :(
UPDATE : TRIED SUGGESTIONS WITH F8 and SAFEMODES... well once i choose any safemode option... STILL BLACK :(

I agree with Michael S. as far as the infection goes, but the fact that none of that will work. in "normal safe mode"
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot-Manager-Disk/UBCD4WIN.shtml get this boot CD and boot from it .... two of the tools i would suggest (Avira Antivirus) and Combofix (This is the one i would run) are on that boot CD. I have seen computers in really bad shape (or so i thought) run Combofix (yes in safe mode) and they are workable (i mean you can boot normal and run scans to be sure your no longer infected) after Combofix. I had always heard about it but never run it before that time and I was shocked at how well it helped.
ComboFix ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix) (FYI)

Answer
If when that pop-up appeared, you followed the instructions to install a program to remove the malicious software that was "detected", then you might have a virus.
Try booting the computer up in "safe mode". When it starts booting, tap the F8 key a few times and that should bring up a boot menu, where one selection will be to Start Windows in Safe Mode (without networking). If that works then you may have a driver or Windows update that went bad. You may be able to fix it if a restore point was created prior to the update (I believe this is automatic with Windows Update). If it works in safe mode, lookup: windows "restore point" for more info on backing out updates/changes. Good luck!
