Okay here's my question, I live a in Ireland and would like to buy a Macbook for college. I have a relative on a J-1 in America and was hoping she could buy it over there and bring it back but as she already has a laptop with her she cannot claim she bought it before she went. Will she be charged Vat when entering the country and if so is there anyway to avoid it? or should I just pay the extra 3 or 4 hundred for it over here.

Answer
Conall, tell her to pack it in her checked luggage, without the packaging or box it came in, remove all labels, to identify it as new. If asked about it, it's used only for designing purposes, and the boyfriend is installing a new program as it is corrupted. If they don't swallow that, then she will be up for the VAT.

I have on two separate trips, taken my nieces are computer each, never had to pay duty or sales tax. One of my colleagues as a computer bag, that fits two laptops, he always travels with two because of the nature of his work, he presents them at security, they are checked, he never has a problem, and he travels the globe for the department.

What is the best way to keep in touch by phone from Ireland to the U.S.?

Visiting Ireland starting June 7th for a study abroad program at Trinity College. Need to understand how to keep in touch by phone. This is my first trip outside the U.S.

Answer
If you're bringing a PC or laptop, try dowloading the Skype programme. You need an internet connection, preferably broadband, but it allows free peer to peer (computer to computer) contact, the charges for calling an ordinary phone using skype tend to be quite reasonable as well & definitely cheaper then using a landline. Info on skype, you can get a special phone to use with your pc/lap top but a headset with a microphone will do the job as well.
If you decide to use skype, you'll need to set it up for the folks back home as well.

This is a list of places offering free Wi Fi.

You also find there are plenty of internet cafes or facilities/communication centres offering cheap phone calls as well.
