Which type of Macbook?

westfall

So I am going into a course for video editing. Its my new major, and it looks like I'm probably going to have to get a Mac. If so, I would need it to be portable because I'm always on the go. So I know I should probably get 8gb RAM, and that I should have a good HDD, but what else for video editing? Is it important that I get the new Retina display model? 15in or 13in? I'm not a Mac person overall, so any advice would help. Thanks.
Also, I know already I should get a Macbook Pro, I just meant which model of the Pro

Answer
Hey, I went through the same deal in college. I majored in screenwriting, but we had to take editing, camera, development, management, everything! So, I too was forced at one point to buy a mac book pro.

you need something that can process big, raw, usually lossless video and audio files without getting the infamous "beach ball" and losing all your work. Which, when it happens after an all nighter of editing, makes you wanna go buy some liquor and make bad decisions.

Well, Mac is absolutely the right choice for editing video and film right now. And 8 gbs of RAM sounds like a lot, but if you have final cut rendering while you're trying to work on the credits, 8gbs becomes USELESS.

With that in mind, I would stay away from the retina for 3 reasons:

1) It is insanely over-priced for what the upgrade is. Trust me, I own one. I am embittered.

2) The RAM is soldered right onto the logic board. (aka, you cannot upgrade the RAM, even illegally. It would F the whole thing up.) So you're stuck with 8 forever.

3) You're gonna be EDITING, bro/bra. You will rarely, if ever, be editing on the actual laptop screen. You need external displays, at least one, to be able to edit and stay sane. There are too damn many windows to make that even an option. I edit on 3 monitors with FC Pro, and it can still be a huge pain sometimes.

So here's you're best bet, in my opinion: forget about the retina, even forget about the 15 inch. Get one of the 13 inch macbook pros with the moving parts HDD. Take care of your machine and that hard drive will be with you a long time. PLUS, they are WAY bigger in terms of storage space and they are CHEAPER! And even though you'll be using the school's RAID systems or whatever they have to do backups, you're always gonna want to keep what you're working on actually ON your computer, at least temporarily.

So yeah, here would be my grocery list for the aspiring editor/financially responsible student:

1) 2012 MBP 13.3" Display with a 500gb HDD and 4gb of RAM. (The extra RAM is crazy easy to install yourself and extremely cheap to order online. The next model up has 8gb, a 750gb HDD, but its $300 more and you can do the RAM yourself for less than a hundred. Use fryselectronics.com. Easy. And you won't be missing that 250gb of extra space. 500 for editing is perfect. You'll never be working on one part of a project that's going to clear 300gb, much less 500. And that's gonna run you $1129.99 on bestbuy.com. They're $70 cheaper than Apple right now.

2) Using some of that cool $1400 you just saved by NOT buying the unnecessary retina model, you're gonna want to get yourself STRAPPED with an awesome monitor. In editing, because you are in charge of viscerally shaping the product that the audience is actually going to see, you need to be seeing an accurate display of your video files while you're doing the shaping, obviously. That means something that is optimized to display 1080p WITHOUT QUESTION and at least a 60hz refresh rate. Also, to make it worth your while, I wouldn't go with anything smaller than 24". I would recommend 27" if you can swing it. It really makes a huge difference. Here's an example of one that would be perfect for you for $299.00:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+27%26%2334%3B+Widescreen+Flat-Panel+LED+HD+Monitor/4979847.p?id=1218587068725&skuId=4979847&st=acer%2027&cp=1&lp=1

Its a really good price for how crazy nice it is. I almost bought one myself, but I couldn't rationalize getting a 4th monitor. Oh yeah, and it's LED so no extra $$$ on your electric bill!

3) Accessories - you wont be able to edit with the 4 inch track-pad on the MBPs. Concede and just get the Apple Magic Mouse. It's completely wireless, has touch features on the top, and goes like 40 feet away no problem. It's accurate and reliable, I use it for everything. $70. Also, you'll need a mini display port to HDMI adapter. They're $12 at best by. It's what the monitor was made to do.

3a) Keyboard (optional) - yeah you can totally use the laptop keyboard. and it'll probably be totally fine for awhile... but then your gonna meet someone who has one of these [$99] (and you wont be able to use your keyboard ever again to edit on FC):

B & H photo are havin themselves a nice online sale right now on the keyboards.

5) Literally, just whatever extra stuff you want. There are thousands of cases and screen protectors, bluetooth speakers, all kinds of gadgets. The possibilities are endless! well, there are a lot of them, at least.

Have fun in school and i hope you're excited because film is a really crazy, rewarding industry to work in, (despite what you may hear.) Best of luck to you!!!!

Macbook Air External Hard Drive?! Please Help!!?

dylan

I just got an 11 inch 2012 Macbook Air 64 gb version and at first, I thought I would be okay, but now I am a little bit worried about the space. I currently have 38 gb left, but I am worried that the longer I have it, the more stuff I will put in it.

Should I just use an external hard drive and just deal with that IF I ever need the extra space, or should I return it and get a larger gb model?

I am a college business student, so I have MS Office installed and I have only about 300+ songs in iTunes, and all of my photos are on an online hosting website, so i have no photos on it and no games, but I do like to surf the web and download some apps sometimes, but nothing too crazy.

Will this computer serve me well in my years to come, and should I just put up with using an external hard drive if I ever do need any extra space?

Answer
It gets me why people buy Mac products at all, when they finish up still installing MS software,
You say your a college business student, You needs to educate yourself into what's going on in world of information technology. Why did you buy a Mac (to be in with the in crowd) when a normal laptop would do the same job better faster cheaper,

Think about this, you bought a Mac, your collage don't cater for the Mac, that's why you had to get ms office, Your going out into the business world, you need to do some serious research into what computer operating systems are being used in the real business world, Less than 1% of businesses use Mac OS/x, Less than 25% of businesses use Microsoft, So what computer operating system is being used by 74% of enterprise businesses, The answer to that is Linux.

Facts
Survey says: Businesses needs Linux IT pros, they need them now, and they're willing to pay real money to get them. 93-percent of hiring managers say they will hire a Linux pro in the next six months, an increase from 89 percent in 2012. More hiring managers in 2013 say that finding Linux talent is difficult â nine out of 10 in 2013; eight out of 10 in 2012 â underscoring the opportunity for tech professionals who know Linux. A mac product might be the in thing, but it's not going to get you a job, You need to be learning how to use Linux now, that's what you going to have to know to get a job,
