I'm a college student, and i cant decide on what laptop to buy .. I have been looking at Macs (13" models but im really sure about the processing power if its enough and the graphics card is intel, but their customer support is awesome according to some friends) and Alienware (m14x, i like this laptop because for the same price as the 13" mac im getting wicked a design, processing speed (Quad core model) and a neat graphics card... but as it turns out a lot of people say that Alienware computers breakdown most of the time and their support sucks, im a little nervous about that) I want something that is reliable.. that would last me around 2-3 years.. are there any alternatives? because im going to use programs that require some horsepower.. is it safe to buy Alienware? or should i just go with the mac with a slower processor and graphics card but better support?
Answer
Hi,
I recommend that you go for a Macintosh itself, since the Mac has been one of the de-facto standards in the industrial design industry since a long time. Alienware laptops are mainly gaming laptops and wouldn't serve many of the purposes required for industrial design.
So my opinion is that you go for a Mac.
Cheers!

Industrial Design Laptop..........?

What type of specs do I need to make sure I have as an Industrial design student. I know that gaming laptops pretty much have what I would need, but I've also been told otherwise and that there's a difference from what gaming laptops do and what I'd actually need as an Industrial Designer.

Try this link out:
http://www.id.carleton.ca/undergraduate/about-the-bid-program/computer-requirements/
This is what is required for Industrial Design at Carleton University.
I looked this up when I started this program, got a Macbook Pro, and I found out in fact almost all of my design profs prefer a mac over a PC (you just run bootcamp to put windows on your mac)
Hope this is helpful.
