best laptop for a graduate student 2012 image
Derek
I know it's a little early but my parents wanted to get started on Christmas shopping and we don't have much money this year.
I am going to be graduating high school in May and going off to college after that.
What are some good ideas for presents I could get? I was going to wait on getting a laptop for my grad present when I get some money. I don't think they can afford a car right now.
I have an iPod and a Camera so I don't need that. Just throw some ideas out! Thanks! :D
I also have a phone. Umm I like technology, art, photography, music. I could ask for a tv but still don't know where I'm going next year and who my roommate will be so I don't get the same thing. Thanks for all the good ideas so far! :)

Ask for some stuff you might need for your dorm room that you might not have yet. I went off to school this fall and there were a lot of things I had to go buy for myself that I needed for my room. Things like new clothes, towels, shower caddy, dishes, a coffee maker. It might not be that fun or exciting but you'll definitely thank your parents later when you don't have to buy that stuff yourself. Maybe have them get you a set of twin xl sheets and a blanket to take to school with you. Trust me. Over the summer you'll put a lot of money into buying these types of things for your dorm room. Asking for a few of them now might not be a bad idea.

Work in Canada while studying in US?
Andrew
Hi All,
Had a quick question, but not sure how simple the answer is. I am currently studying in the USA on an F1 Visa doing my Masters. I recently received a job offer in Canada and plan to move there in December 2012. I also have a Canadian work Visa. My questions are:
Since I will not graduate until August 2013, can I continue my studies in the US while working and living in Canada? I have finished all my coursework and can do my research remotely as all I need is my laptop. I plan to visit the US once every 2-3 months, so I won't be breaking the 'maximum 5 months outside the US' rule for F1 Visa holders. I can also provide a US mailing address for my University needs as I have some relatives there.
Secondly, since I wont have any income in the US, will I need to file taxes for both US and Canada. I have read that F1 students in the US are required to file taxes even if they don't have any income in the country. Is this correct?
I plan to move permanently to Canada after my studies. So don't want to lose this Job opportunity. Appreciate any suggestions you have. Thanks.

Your school in the US has a Designated School Official (DSO) who can look at your case closely using the SEVIS system, which you're in, to make sure you -- and the school -- does not run afoul of Homeland Security. Unlike the other response, I think you may be fine. There's a PTO piece to your visa.
