i need a laptop with a big hard drive . i need it for photoshop, sony movie maker 8, and the sims. plus the extra space for word and power point documents. also it has to be under 500 dollars cuzthat is all i can afford right now. other requirments:
Windows Operating System:
- Windows XP SP3 (service pack 3 or higher)
OR
- Vista operating system.
AND
- Working CD drive and USB ports (or access to an external CD drive)
AND
- Minimum memory is:
o Windows XP 512 MB

Good cheap laptop for college student under 500?

Hi! So i really need a laptop but im on a budget. Id like for it to have at least 4GB, 14 inch, something like intel core i3 and up, a webcam etc but under $500. I hear HP dandelion breeze and Dell 14' Inspiron N411Z are good. What do you think? Anyone tech savvy- please recommend any laptops for me and where I could probably buy them. Thanks!

I got it in pink, but it also comes in lime green, and a blue that actually looks black. Its only $329.99 and it works great! I've been loving it so far! The only thing I'm not so crazy about is the speakers don't get too loud. It works really fast though and I love how cool it looks! Its also super light because it does not have a disc drive, but I got it in a bundle with an external one and a case! I barely use the disc drive so this works great for me!! Also the battery life is great it lasts for like 5/6 hours!!!
I used to buy more expensive laptops, but then I realized that even the expensive ones will break in a few years so why not buy a cheap one that gets the job done and then it wont be as big a deal when it breaks!
This one works just as good as my previous $600 laptop!!

I'm entering my second year of college and I need to get a new laptop before the semester starts. About a year and a half ago I bought my first laptop which is the one I used all last year (my first year of college). It's an Acer Aspire 5520. I really liked it at first and it worked perfectly. During my spring semester though it started acting really weird. The touch-pad wouldn't work, the whole bottom of the laptop would get really hot and it would crash several times a day. Sometimes it would just shut off as I was using it (I don't know if this is considered crashing).
Anyway, I can't deal with a laptop like this. I need to be sure that the laptop I have is reliable and will be working for me to be able to study and save files on it.
I don't play games on it. I just save documents. I have an iTunes and I occasionally watch movies and burn music.
Basically I need a computer that has a decent memory and will be reliable. Any advice?

I looked at Best Buy and here are a few I was looking at.
Sony VAIO
Dell Inspiron
Toshiba Satellite

I definitely don't want another Acer because I had such a bad experience with it. I don't even use it anymore because it just makes me really frustrated.
Also, any ideas on what I should do with my Acer?

You could visit a site like Gazelle and see whether you could sell it to them, then use some of the money from the sale towards a new laptop.

Personally I think Sony VAIO are overpriced, but have had decent experiences with Dell and Toshiba, as well as Lenovo laptops.

You could try to find some good deals at the site below, there are frequently sales listed for laptops and other electronics.

It has a GT525m gpu (better than integrated) and a i3 2310m (good). It is used but in good condition. I'm not personally selling it but the seller has 100% positive feedback (great). I highly recommend this buy, it's a great deal.

The first Dell is ancient? It's still being sold from Dell.

And I know in most cases it's a bad idea however this gpu is known to overclock well and isn't hot.

I would never recommend overclocking a laptop in any way unless I knew the cooling was adequate. My friend owns the second laptop listed, I know what I'm talking about. His is actually slower than the one listed.

Core 475mhz
Ram 700mhz IF the ram is at 600mhz already

To overclock you'll need an overclocking tool but you can easily find that online.

If things get glitchy after overclocking just lower the clock speeds 5mhz at a time still it's stable.

If you don't care about screen size then this would perform better but with a smaller screen:

Andy clearly doesn't understand what "under 500" means hahaha. I know the laptops I listed weren't the best but they are great computers for the price. The people that disliked probably have Core i7 laptops that couldn't even comprehend having a Core 2 Duo in their system despite it being a decent processor. Ignore the dislikes, please. I know what I'm talking about, if you wanted a $520 laptop I would suggest something different but that wasn't what you wanted. Maybe if people READ what you wanted they wouldn't be giving me thumbs downs.

College student looking for a tablet to take notes on?

I am a non-art major student. I am looking for a cheap (under 500$) tablet with handwriting recognition. I do not want to have to be connected to a laptop in order to use it. I just want a tablet with a stylus that I can write on. I have heard good things about Wacom however it seems that those are just for drawing and photoshop, or they have to be connected to a laptop to use. Help? Suggestions?

I would have to go with the iPad you can type your papers using the pages app by Apple, HD Video for crystal clear video calls through Skype, you can even buy a keyboard for it if you want to type on a real keyboard, and with iOS 5 you don't even need a computer to set it up, It also includes an HD screen and starts at 499

The only computers that are under 500 are netbooks. If a regular computer is don't expect it to last long, netbooks have crappy proccesors little ram, and really small screens. a computer under 500 won't last to long traveling across campus with all the hard drive shaking, skypeing on a netbook will be terrible because the crappy processor. but if you only need to read emails and type, a netbook may work. Because you are in college though I'm sure you will get interested in computer games, and watching movies on your laptop, which a netbook is not good for,

this is a solid computer even though it goes over your budget it is well worth the money and you won't break the hard drive in it due to travel across campus because there is no hard drive, there is a SSD drive which you can shake around all you want and it won't break.

here is another laptop with good ratings its the only laptop that toshiba has that is under 500 it may get the job done i would consider a ram upgrade, it is for kids so it has kid friendly stuff preinstalled you can uninstall that though.

just about anything you get will do that. just make sure you have a dual core processor, 2gb of memory, and at least a 250gb hard drive.
