I would not recommend a laptop. It's only advantage is size and portability. I have one which I need for portablility, but that is really the only advantage. You sacrifice performance, reliability, and price by going with a laptop over a PC. A laptop's lifespan is far shorter than that of a PC as well. When it comes to repairing or upgrading it is way cheaper and easier to do it on a PC than a Laptop. If you need to take it places though, laptop is your only choice.

I mean now that I am supposed to buy one for college(B.Tech in Software Engineering), what features should I look for in terms of processor,RAM,hard disk capacity?
Will Intel Atom be sufficient for my needs?
Please give suggestions for the apt configuration (RAM,graphic card,hard disk,processor ,battery life etc)

Any person will try to sell you graphics and sound, etc. You want Max speed. So core processors and RAM.

I have an Intel i7 with 4GIG ram and love it! I'm a Domain Administrator and my laptop is the fastest machine in the whole company i admin in.

It was 900.00 a couple of months ago from best buy. Mine is a Toshiba Satellite A505.

Get with the Engineering department. They will have a minimum requirements sheet and maybe even suggested computer models. You need to buy a model with the minimum requirements outlined on that sheet from your department. Requirements vary from school to school and even from department to department.

If you want to go beyond the minimum, that is fine. You are only restricted by your budget at that point.

My son will be get admission for B.Tech Information Technology.He has to study four years to complete the course and he may be continue his master studies.So,please suggest a best configuration computer that will suit upto certain years.

That will give him a good start! I would get a desktop rather than a laptop. You get much more for your money; easier to upgrade, and last longer. Keep in mind that the state-of-the-art computer system you get today, will be outdated, but still functional in 4 years. The conventional computers that everyone uses today will be replaced with a "super" cell phone in less than 10 years!
I would let your son pick out the computer.
