what is the typical size laptops that college students bring to class?

Q. i'm starting college august 2011 and i am preparing for it now. i was curious as to what size laptops most college students take to class? i heard its 15" standard,no matter the brand. i am thinking of getting a 12" lenovo thinkpad because my preference is smaller laptops. is that embarrassing? i mean, i dont want to walk into class and everyone has these ginormous laptops and i have a smaller one. thanks in advance.

Answer
Actually, many professors have banned laptops in classes. People who bring them aren't taking notes, they're distracting themselves and others. Get a laptop you'll use in your room, and don't worry about bringing it to class unless you're specifically told to. Just get a pad of paper and a pen to take notes. The only person I ever saw using the laptop to take notes had a netbook, so it was small.

What is the best laptop to buy for a student attending college in the fall of 2011?

Dillon Ben

My parents are letting me get a laptop before college. I can spend up to $1000. Maybe a few more hundred. What would be the best bang for my buck?
I was looking at the Macbook Pro but I would only be able to afford the 13". I dont know if this is too small or not.

Answer
Haters gonna hate but i would honestly recommend a macbook pro, this laptop is reliable, wont ever die, has specs that will cover your needs, and if you have a problem, Apple has the best customer support in the business. It is well worth the money. If the MacBook pro is too pricey, a standard MacBook will do just fine.

edit: I have the base 13" model and I think it is the perfect size. It is light and portable and the battery will last me around 7 hours.

Answer
The larger display for your eyes. I bet in two months that you will want to uninstall Norton and get Kaspersky or Eset. If you never owned a laptop, I give you one month before you drop or spill liquids on it which will turn it into garbage material.

I'm going to college in fall 2011 and am going to buy a macbook pro. I keep hearing these rumors about the new Mac OS X Lion coming out but does this mean a whole new model will come out too? When do you recommend I buy my laptop for college? Now or August? Also, what accessories do you recommend for a college student besides a bag/case and security lock?

Answer
Mac OS X Lion was announced yesterday in WWDC 2011 and it's coming out in July.
It will be available for update through Mac App Store for 29.99$.

MacBook Pro was updated 103 days ago, and it will be updated in about other 150.

I would recommend you to buy your laptop in August, if you don't need it now.
I would also recommend you a simple bag, not any security locks and stupid things.
If your laptop has been stolen, you lose it, with Security lock or without.

Should I get the iPad for Christmas or wait for the iPad2?

Q. I am a student in college and wanted to use the iPad for note taking and what not. I really could care less about a camera for facetime, or a USB port, seeing that I can buy an external USB port. If I don't care about not having a camera should I go ahead and get the first generation?

Answer
think about the disadvantages of the ipad.

it doesnt have a
-physical keyboard (you cant rest your fingers on the touchscreen)
-webcam
-card reader
-usb,lan and expansion ports
-removable battery
-video out
-open platform
-multi-tasking

it has
-touchscreen (touchscreen always gets dirty and needs to be cleaned)
-low storage 16gb instead of 160gb against a laptop
-cost double or triple than a 10 inch laptop.

"the problem is , notebooks arent better at **anything*" steve jobs --- this guy is joking.
...

extra
*all the software and apps for ipad in the itunes store will cost you unlike many of the free software in a laptop.

*if you buy a laptop you are not tempted to buy accessories like the ipad itself

IPad 2 comes out on april 2011 most likely since new ipods/iphones are released yearly and hopefully ipad 2 will

What computer technologies should I expect in 2012?

I want to buy a new gaming laptop for collage.I have this year an 1+ from high school and I am going to go in 2011-2012 in collage. I want a top gaming laptop of 3500-5500$
Will there be a new CPU, Graphic card, Ram that will be much faster then ?

Answer
This is sort of a pointless question.

Of course there will be new CPU's, new GPU's, faster and higher capacity RAM and hard drives. They are in a constant state of change, and new additions to each of those categories come out at least once a year, so you're looking at at least 2 generations better than what we have now.

But you might want to rethink your strategy, as a super powerful gaming laptop is not very portable and it's battery life will suck. And as a college student myself, you are going to want a laptop that you can take where ever you need, easily (both weight and size) and something that wont die in an hour. Come back to Yahoo Answers when you are ready to buy a gaming laptop, as any advice as to parts is pure speculation and will lead you astray.

How could I convince my grandparents to buy me a mac book air for my birthday?

Casey

Hey everyone! I was recently stuck in a school situation which was I had no computer to right my essay on, that's when I started thinking about a lap top for myself. I am 13 years old and turning 14 on the 30th of October. From what I know ( I'm obsessed with apple!) Mac airs are great computer to have. Very portable, the processing is great, it last for a long time ( if you take care of it) I know my friend that has her old white apple lap top is still running strong! The problem is the price I guess, I'm afraid to tell them I would like that as my birthday AND Christmas gift. In 2011 I got a ipad for Christmas, but that's also a lot less exspensive, and I helped pay for it. I was 11. And this type of computer is great for my age, I know how to use it and it has everything id possibly need in a computer,I really think its worth getting for that amount if it's going to last me a long time. Id really prefer apple out of any other brand,I just like it more. So how could I convince them?

Answer
You really don't need one. The only people who need laptops should be college students. By the time you reach college, that MacBook will be useless.

You're too young to drive, so it's not like you're not at home. Just use a desktop
