Sony Vaio Laptop Purchase?

Zenkotsu

Hi guys, I need another opinion.

I have a friend who's selling his Sony Vaio Laptop because for his college career, it doesn't have what he needs in a MacBook Pro which he needs for Architecture. He bought the laptop from NY, no warranty for $1000 before tax and is selling it now. I don't know much of the specifics but he tells me he can play the games he own such as Fear 2, Fallout 3 on high settings. He's selling it to me for $600 low and I need a laptop for college. My budget is low and I was wondering if it's worth it to buy a laptop like that. Also note, it's been used for 8-9 months, it has Windows XP Media Center Edition x64, 2gb ram, 7 or 8 series of Nvidia graphics card...should I get this even if it doesn't have warranty? or should i buy online with warranty and get default crappy Vista Home Premium which I have come to hate because of its buginess.

Thanks for answering.

Answer
I have a Vaio and I like it (I'm an architecture student too). However after a month of purchasing my Vaio, there was a major problem with the computer and it was all because of my warranty that I was able to get it fix for free. I think my case is rare and doesn't usually happen. If you like everything about your friend's computer I say get it, because you can't find another laptop with similar features for $600, at lease maybe not a Vaio. But look around, there has been other models out recently for good price.

Which Sony Vaio series laptop is good for both gaming and college?

melissa

Answer
A laptop that is good for gaming should be good for college. High-end games require more performance than most other things you would do. For high end games, people usually go with an i7 processor and a separate video card. I noticed Sony has a gaming bundle put together:

http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666386466

that would seem quite sufficient. At some point it depends on how much money you have to spend. I suspect if you got a laptop with an i5 processor and dedicated graphics, you'd be fine and the price would be a lot less.

Sony Vaio Laptops or Hp Laptops for college?

Sleepy Hea

I'm planning to buy a laptop in the States and use it here in The Philippines for College and I can't seem to decide whether which of the two brands would I buy ?

I would be taking up BS Nursing
and also I want a laptop for Mp3
Can watch Movies or Play Games such as Sims
and for research work
word processing and for presentations like microsoft for example
large space for large documents
and can at least last long maybe 4 years

Answer
Personally, I prefer HP. Sony Vaios tend to heat up a bit too much.. theyre also more pretty than functional.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop and have 1 1/2 of college left. I am a computer web development major and am just starting my computer courses. I have had the computer for 3 1/2 years. I am asking because my cell phone needs to be replaced every 1-2 years. Just trying to get an idea. Thanks!

Answer
As long as you treat it well, it will continue to last. There are companies till this day that use computers from the 80's. AKA legacy systems. It can easily last you 5-10 years. The reason people buy new computers is to get better hardware and stuff. With web development, you may need a big hard drive or an external drive, because developing websites can be space savvy. I have a big laptop, but I use it for not just only web development, but software development too. CPU and RAM isn't so much of an issue with web development, because most of your files will be stored on a web server and ran from there too.

Macbooks! They can be expensive but they can also last a long time if you take good care of them. I've had mine for about two years and my sister has had hers for like five.

I have some knowledge about computers, not much but some. What do you think I need?
I want one of these still undecided on which one, and what series:
Samsung
Sony Vaio ( i think im leaning towards this one )

This laptop is college, What specs is necessary for a college students computer?

I also do some hard gaming on it.

Id like to have the option to run
Call of Duty on HD graphics with minor lag
Minecraft on max render
Runescape runs smoothly
between 500-1000

Answer
If you want to play games on high settings without lag, you're going to need a gaming device, which means it isn't going to be cheap. The first thing you're going to want to look for is a dedicated graphics card. This means you want an AMD graphics card where the second number is at least a 4 or an Nvidia graphics card where the second number is at least a 2. You'll also want to have plenty of RAM. 4GB is probably enough, but you'll want more to "future proof" it- so that you'll continue to be able to play new games 3 or 4 years from now. You can always buy the extra RAM later if you can't get it now.

If you're looking at Sony, the S series is what you'll want. Upgrade the processor to at least a Core i5 and the RAM to at least 6GB if you can afford it. I'm not familiar with Samsung's laptops, so I'm not sure what series to get.

What is the best kind of laptop to buy for college? *under $600*?
