New Laptop for college!!!?

I'm in serious need of a new laptop, and I have no idea what to get.
I"m a freshman in college so I need a slim and light laptop that I will have no problem taking with me to the library or lecture halls or where ever else I'll be going to study. Oh, and a long battery life is essential too.
I also plan on watching movies and videos on the laptop so I think I want one that's about 14inches.
I've been attempting to do research, and I like the Asus UL80VT for its long battery life and the fact that it's under 15 lbs while still having a 14 inch screen. Is that a good laptop? I don't really play games at all but I will be watching movies, web surfing, using word documents and listening to music, so basically just the essentials.
Any other suggestions under 1.2K?

Yes, The Asus UL80VT is a good notebook but it is a bit bulky. You can get good laptops from Asus, Dell and Sony. But Sony is overpriced and not valuable to money. As your needs are amateur, you can get a Acer 4750G laptop with a Intel Pentium Dual-Core. For a better one, you can check out Dell Studio 15 with Intel Core i5, 4 GB RAM and a good graphic card. Also you can get a netbook which usually have the battery life of about 8-10 hours. But they have a tiny screen and keyboard so not recommended to you

If you CAN only wait, Intel would launch decent dual-core netbook chips.So you can get it.

Don't spend extra money on Macbooks, they're expensive but are powerful and entertaining also being durable.

I'm looking to buy a laptop for college. I want something light weight and smaller, so that I can bring it around with me at school all day. I would prefer it was pink.
Macbook is a little out of my price range and a netbook won't have all the things I need on it.
I'm trying to keep my price range under $600

Best laptop for college?

So im going to Tulane next year and naturally i am in need of a laptop. I have looked around best buy and while a few caught my eye, i found them all very comparable. I looked at a Dell, Toshiba, Sony, and HP. i am just wondering if any of these companies are better for college. I have heard that Dell has great warranties but also that there parts are difficult to get. Price range is about 800 to 1100 so i want the best bang for my buck without going overboard. I will mostly be doing papers and projects but i want to have the potential to create videos, music, and maybe do some gaming. all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Best Laptops for College?

I am looking for a laptop for college. I am not majoring in a field that needs a special type of computer but I am looking for one with these qualities.

long battery life
2MB of storage or more
duel core
wireless internet
upgradable
fast
lightweight
under $1,000
last for a least 4 yrs.

Qualities I don't need:
Gaming computers or computers that burn CD's or DVDs

I am not getting a Dell because they are not the best quality, or a mac because they are way out of my budget. I have been looking at HP but does anyone know if other brands are any good, such as toshiba, sony, samsung, or acer?
Also what are the pros and cons of notebooks?

Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated.

I wouldn't rate Acer as being any better than Dell. HP, Tosh and Sony are all top brands but they have prices to match - on a spec-for-spec basis I doubt you'll find them substantially cheaper than a Mac.

You also need to refine your requirements - 2MB of storage is tiny by modern standards to the extent it must be an error of some kind. Even 2GB is tiny. 2TB isn't but conversely is very large for a laptop hard drive. Also, some of your requirements are contradictory. No laptop is particularly upgradable but the most upgradable are generally not particularly small or light. A fast machine generally has a shorter battery life, especially if it must also be light. Cheap, fast, light and good quality are naturally not properties that go together - if they did why would anyone buy anything different?

Ultimately then what you have here is a list of aspirations rather than a real spec. Everything on that list is desirable in and of itself but when selecting a real world machine you need something more substantial - you need to decide what really is important and should be prioritised ahead of other factors.

I need an hp laptop for college and I'm torn between two choices: HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Entertainment Notebook PC and the HP Pavilion dv4-1225dx Entertainment Notebook PC. Both have similar characteristics but the first laptop has a longer battery life (7 hours) which is the better purchase? I was told that longer battery life isn't much and just makes the laptop heavier.

I am in the market for a laptop and have no idea what to look for. My price range is around $700-$1200. This summer I am planning on going to a spanish language school and I need a laptop that is not to flashy, because i will be traveling to some places that aren't the safest. I will be traveling though and doing a lot of on-the-go things so I would prefer it be light-weight and portable (I don't want a clunker) I just need a laptop for college. I am not a gamer and I don't need a laptop built for that. A good battery is a must. If anyone has suggestions let me know please!
Oh and I will not be in the most developed areas and I won't have the money to spend on any repairs or fixes. Reliability is a must!!!

That's a big price range for what you want. A light-weight and portable laptop with good battery without a lot of power is pretty easy to get.

I'm looking for a laptop for college. I want to take it to school. I go to Metro State. It's a commuter campus so I take the light rail. I want to write papers on it, I would like Microsoft Works. And I also want to put pictures and music.
What type of computer is better? Dell? HP? Apple? etc..
What should I look for when purchasing a laptop?
I want it to last all 4 years and even into grad school.
It must be affordable but quality is more important.
What do you recommend?

Well, I'm also a metro rider. I went with a used Dell D-400. Got it off ebay and it has 1G ram, decent processor, burner, case, etc. total price was $260 (including shipping). The key is that it has a 12.1 inch screen so it fits easy on the lap while riding. Also lasts about 2 hours on battery.

So my suggestion would be a used dell if you want to be under $400 or so. New small laptops are $1,200+. MAC of course is good but expensive. The thing with Dell is there is always a ton of parts available for them should you have a problem or break it. Now, XP is not sold any longer as an operating system but is still widely used. I don't care for Vista and I'm not even sure if my laptop would run it. But I do basic spreadsheets and word docs, surf internet and maybe burn music with it. So even though xp may not be used in the next 4 years, I'll be fine. People still can get by usign Windows 98!

Just be very careful if buying a laptop off of ebay. Pay attention to seller feedback!

ps - as for HP, I did look at them as well, but they don't seem to hold up as much and the small ones are really expensive. My company has 1000's of dells in service with minimal problems.
