Laptops foe college students?

Donna

I was wondering which laptops you would recommend for college students. I'm starting classes in the summer and I want to buy a laptop for school purposes but there are so many choices. Does anyone know a good laptop for students? Thanks!!

Answer
Here's the list I've found. Here's the link http://mylaptop101.blogspot.com/2012/10/cheap-high-quality-laptops-for-students.html

Which is the best laptop for a student starting college in 2012?

Ahmed Bila

My budget is from 500-750 USD. I am NOT going to use it for gaming. Primary use is watching movies, using a couple of softwares, facebook, youtube, music etc... And I have a dell inspiron i3 right now and when i open multiple tabs, it slows down pathetically so please also keep that factor in mind.

Answer
1. Here this one looks cool and would be my first choice within your price point and lenovos last forever ( A big screen blocks your phone so you can text in class if you take it with you. lol.)

Solidworks 2012 download?

Q. i'm a student in Ireland studying DCG. As part of my course I have to use Solidworks for a CAD project. My teacher says that there is some way he can licence the whole class to download it, But only the 2013 version. Is this true? My laptop runs Windows XP and therefore cannot run this version. Is there some way to download the 2012 version that I can run?
If not, where can I get a cracked CD copy of windows 7?
it's a Dell Latitude D430. originally ran vista, but it was downgraded to XP before i owned it.
details of my computer are here:
http://www.dell.com/us/dfb/p/latitude-d430/pd

Answer
If your laptop runs XP then you have other problems... I doubt you even have the memory to run solidworks effectively.

If you have a chance to, get a legitimate license and get a new laptop with an SSD and 6GB plus memory.

If you try to run solidworks on your laptop right now it will make you want to shoot yourself in the face ... no joke.

Your laptop must be over 8 years old at this point.

edit: we aren't supposed to talk about bittorrent on yahoo answers...

what is a good hp laptop made within 5 years?

Q. I'm looking to a new laptop for my birthday but don't know what to ask for. I prefer it to be hp designed and with at least 4 GB of ram and at least 150 GB of drive space. I feel picky but these are my preferences due to to the music, video, and program storage I use on a daily basis on my PC. Also I'm coming to the point in school where I'm going to need computerized data to submit to my mentors. My parent's budget is $600.

Answer
I have some issues in your wording. A new laptop in the US was made within the last few months since inventory tends to move quickly, and there may be a few about a year old still waiting to be sold. 5 years ago, HP probably did make and sell laptops, and now, like Acer-Gateway-Packard Bell, they are a Procurement and Re-seller and they are designed and produced by several Taiwanese and Chinese companies with an HP label and a bit of shell customizing. All laptops are pretty much made by these companies in China. HP on some adds a Beats profiling and a sub-woofer designed into some models.
In the last few years, the HP reliability and quality surveys do not look good, although they still like HP and Dell in India for some reason.
Here is my documentation:
2012: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2020725/apple-macbooks-lead-in-laptop-features-and-reliability.html
HP in the bottom half

2011: http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
HP second last

2010:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/211402/laptops.html
HP last place

The basic laptop sold in the USA today above $400, if not a solid state drive will have 500+GB HDD and 4+GB RAM

If you only want HP, even though Acer-Gateway, Dell home, HP-Compaq Home, Lenovo Essentials G series are mostly the same weaker results, and all other laptops under about $400 are also a bit questionable, there are good initial reviews for some HP ultrabooks.
Personally, I think Lenovo did a good job with the Ideapad Z400 Touch, that at Lenovo.com is $600 plus tax with an i3, and $660 as a better i5 model, as Windows 8 is aimed at Touchscreen technology, but you did say HP-Only. Maybe you have a long memory when they used to be better.

Again - all based on extensive surveys; not my personal experience other than Y/A issues reported with overheating and crashing. Google will also tell you a lot. The number of refurbished systems out there tells you something also.

Newegg shows about 18 HP laptops that are new and not open box or refurb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&N=100006740&IsNodeId=1&minPrice=400&maxPrice=625&Manufactory=1186%2C44242%2C1548&bop=And&Pagesize=50

Here is a basic one for $500 after rebate.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834256720
HP Pavilion g6-2260us Notebook Intel Core i3 3110M(2.40GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 750GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi Intel HD Graphics 4000

HP is offering Touchscreen starting at $600. Is there a student registration for a discount? HP has all kinds of discount codes hiding on the internet to scour out.

Best 2012 Laptop for a student?

Kelly

What laptop should I get? I am a student and I use my laptop now every single day! for the following: schooling of course, facebook, youtube, yahoo, twitter, itunes, photo/video editing (Btw I have alot of photos and videos and music so I need plenty of memory) I need one in the price range of 500-1000 dollars....What type should I get (other than an apple macbook) that is the best for that price range...

PLEASE no rude comments
Thank You :)
and if you know anything about the HP Beats laptop....Tell me please :)

Answer
The brand ASUS is what I recommend. For your use, I would look for the following specs:

*Intel Core i3 or i5 processor
*4 or more GB of RAM (memory)
*500GB or larger Hard drive

If you see a video card (probably something like "GeForce" or "Radeon") this is a bonus, however, these aren't generally with the Intel processors, which are more of a priority.

ASUS is great because they are reliable, are available at many common computer and box stores, and many models even offer free accidental coverage.

Also, there are many models, which will allow you to find one in your price range.

Additional notes:

If you see an "AMD" processor, or a laptop with one is recommended to you, watch out for low speed. Sometimes AMD offers more "cores" but less speed. To keep it simple, ask for a laptop with at least "2 GHz (gig- a -hertz)", and you should have no problems.

I'm not positive how much "a lot of photos/videos" is so perhaps 320GB hard drive is fine, or maybe you need 750GB. Don't buy more than what you need (plus a little extra, of course), and try to avoid switching brands just to get a bigger drive. If you need more space just to store your videos and photos, you can always buy an external drive, or a thumb drive, which are quite large now.

Good luck in school, hope this helps you find what you need.

What computer technologies should I expect in 2012?

I want to buy a new gaming laptop for collage.I have this year an 1+ from high school and I am going to go in 2011-2012 in collage. I want a top gaming laptop of 3500-5500$
Will there be a new CPU, Graphic card, Ram that will be much faster then ?

Answer
This is sort of a pointless question.

Of course there will be new CPU's, new GPU's, faster and higher capacity RAM and hard drives. They are in a constant state of change, and new additions to each of those categories come out at least once a year, so you're looking at at least 2 generations better than what we have now.

But you might want to rethink your strategy, as a super powerful gaming laptop is not very portable and it's battery life will suck. And as a college student myself, you are going to want a laptop that you can take where ever you need, easily (both weight and size) and something that wont die in an hour. Come back to Yahoo Answers when you are ready to buy a gaming laptop, as any advice as to parts is pure speculation and will lead you astray.

Do you get to keep your Treca computer?

Cat

Do you get to keep your treca laptop/computer? Treca is an online schooling system in the state of Ohio. They give you a free laptop/computer. Only asking people with experience thanks! Also they give you an ipod and now an ipad. Do you get to keep those? Thanks in advance!

Answer
Don't be silly. No state legislature is going to fund a free computer, free iPhone and free iPad to any group of students. In case you haven't heard, there's a bit of a monetary squeeze on at the moment. (Recession? Sequester? Any of that ringing a bell?)

Page 9 of your handbook:
"TDA provides each student with the tools and equipment necessary for participation in TDA. The equipment shall not be abused, misused, or disassembled. Parents and students hereby accept responsibility for damages resulting from abuse, misuse, or disassembly, and agree to abide by appropriate disciplinary actions. Students, who transfer to another school, withdraw, graduate, are expelled, or leave TDA for any reason, must return all tools and equipment provided by TDA in working order and in original or equivalent packing materials to TDA (100 Executive Drive, Marion, OH 44302). Damaged or stolen equipment must be reported to TDA immediately."

How important is it for a graphic design student to have a mac?

Vamos a

I'm considering majoring in graphic design in the fall of 2012 and I'm looking to get a new laptop for school. How important is it to have a mac for this major?

Answer
A mac is just the same as a PC and should be compared the same way. Only thing that really makes mac different is its qualaty controlled and its the only computer that can legally run the mac operating system (it can run windows as well actually and you can run a mac on a non apple PC but its illegal and requires a patch). Just look at the specs of a mac and compare it to a PC of the same price range.

You should really be asking yourself are you more used to mac OSX or windows?

@Meh, Internets actually thats not true. Macs just have less of a price range of products compared to a non mac PC. Although you can get PC deals while Mac computers almost NEVER have a deal so PCs are cheaper in that sense. Its incorect to call them windows PCs because most PCs are not made by microsoft, they usually come with windows yes but they can run linux and other operating systems as well. Macs on the other hand are 100% made by apple.

Im a new college student and i need a nrw good laptop. I need one tht is fast and one that can store alot of stuff. Im looking to spend around 300-400 on one. I dont want a used one. It must b new. I need some suggestions on wat brand wat to look for and where to find one. Your help is appreciated.

Answer
I'd say check bestbuy.com. They always have bundles and deals. Over december 2012, I got a dell laptop bundle for just $380!
It came with:
Laptop
Carrying Sleeve
1-year Micro Trend Anti-Virus
2-Year BestBuy Warranty
Logitech Portable USB Wireless Mouse
8GB PNY Flash Drive
*Sure the laptop doesn't look or feel amazing, but it gets work done. It powers with a 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Celeron CPU, 3GB Ram, and a 250HD. It has a mic and webcam built in, and the keyboard is kinda like the macbook except the keys are more rounded a bit. It came with Windows 8 (not pro) but it's enough. Anyway's I'd say check either bestbuy.com or your local store as I didn't now about the Dell Deal untill I walked in the store. (: I'm sure you can find a decent one online for $300.

How should I file my taxes as a student? Details are included?

Stephen K

Alright, I've been browsing the web and reading a lot of different articles and sources of information with regards to how I should file my taxes but it all seems contradicting and it all is not very clear to me. So, with that said, I request any help I can get with how I should file my taxes. In advance, any help will be greatly appreciated. I anticipate to file but I am not sure what all to claim on my form. Details regarding 2012 are as follows (numbers are close to actual numbers, but not exact):

- Resident of Alabama for 7 years
- Enrolled August-December of 2012 as a full time college student
- Scholarship from university for ~$3500
- Federal Direct Sub Loan ~$1500 (I have not started paying back yet)
- Paid ~$300 out of pocket for school, not including a ~$700 laptop for school
- Provided over 1/2 of my income, so will not be a dependent on my parent's income even though I
do live with them.
- Self-Employed, ~$8000 untaxed earnings
- No kids
- No spouse

So, that's it in a nutshell. I know I may be asking a lot; however, I am not asking for someone to file my taxes for me. I would just like any help on what to consider deductible or what all I need to claim. Any help will be much appreciated.

Answer
I'll take your details point-by-point and explain how they are related to your tax situation:

- Resident of Alabama for 7 years
Irrelevant for federal tax purposes. You will have to file the federal form and then the Alabama tax form afterwards (if Alabama has a state income tax).

- Enrolled August-December of 2012 as a full time college student
How old are you? If you're under 24, you may be considered a dependent on your parents' tax return. Did you provide at least half of your own support? If so, they cannot claim you and you would file as a single individual, and nobody can claim you on their forms.

- Scholarship from university for ~$3500
Did you use this for school purposes, or outside of school? If for school purposes, it's not considered taxable income.

- Federal Direct Sub Loan ~$1500 (I have not started paying back yet)
The proceeds from this loan were used to pay for tuition, and can qualify you for education credits. Some credits (like the American Opportunity Credit) are refundable.

- Paid ~$300 out of pocket for school, not including a ~$700 laptop for school
Your school should have provided you with a 1098-T statement, although that is for informational purposes only. This statement can be used when claiming educational expenses (I'll attach a publication that explains them in my sources).

- Provided over 1/2 of my income, so will not be a dependent on my parent's income even though I
do live with them.
Well that answered my question from earlier. You are not considered a dependent on your parents' form then.

- Self-Employed, ~$8000 untaxed earnings
This is where it gets tricky. You will have to start with a Schedule C, then move on to Schedule SE to report Self-Employment Tax. Since your income was untaxed, you will have to pay the Self-Employment Tax, which covers your portion of Medicare and Social Security.

- No kids
- No spouse
Well good, one person makes it a bit easier to sign and file.

Good on you for taking the tough task of filling out your return, but I'll warn you it might get a little tough. However, you will save yourself the $200-300 on tax preparation fees that many places charge. What you should do first is start filling out Schedule C for your Self-Employment earnings, then move on to Schedule SE to figure out your Self-Employment Tax. After that, move on to Form 8863 to claim your education credits, and once all those forms are done, you can fill out Form 1040. All of these forms are available from the IRS.gov website, and I've linked them below for you.

Good luck!
