The best laptop for incoming college freshman?

Badly Draw

I realize this is probably a redundant question, but oh well.
My price range is from about 500-800 dollars(lower the better obviously).

I would LIKE for it to have the full version of Microsoft Word, and other essential programs, but I suppose I can fork up a little money if it's only a trial.

It also may be used for a bit of light gaming. Nothing too serious or demanding, however.

And a Mac is out of the question. They're mainly just too expensive.

Thank you very much

Answer
Hello.

Define Light Gaming?

Hehe.

Here are some Models from Newegg. (If you don't want to buy from online, write down the model number and try to find it at your nearby computer store, Bestbuy, Fry's Electronics, etc).

Good Processor Speed, decent graphics for mild to moderate gaming.

Good Warranty/Tech Support from ASUS. Processor is not as good, however gets the job done. Graphics are for Moderate gaming. Bigger screen.

Price is at the limit (don't forget taxes and shipping). Processor is Good at a good speed. Graphics are for Moderate gaming. Good Warranty/Tech Support from ASUS. Very good Laptop for the Price.

(Define Light Gaming for a better price match) But these Laptops should be good for some gaming and schoolwork.

Most of these laptops come with 64-bit Vista Home Premium with a free upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit Operating System in the Month of October 2009.

Microsoft Office is not included in the laptops (if they do its trial verison) The Trial Versions allow for you to purchase for the full verison after the trial version ends.

Laptops also come with alot of Bloatware (useless/annoying programs that are on trial verison) and you might need to decide what to remove and what to keep.

As for Microsoft Office, I think the
Student/Home Verison should be enough (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and OneNote) (you can install it onto 3 Individual PCs before license expires)

If you are looking for more programs then check for Microsoft Office Professional or Ultimate Verisons. Price just for the software is 299-499 dollars.
Gotta love Microsoft.

Hope that Helps.

Enjoy College.

Laptop recomendations for incoming College Freshmen?

Vince

I was wondering what kind of laptop would you recommend me getting for college. I want a strong laptop that is visually appealing and is also sturdy with high performance.
lol i think its important if it slides off a bed or something that it doesn't break in half. I have been having bad luck with technology lately lol

Answer
I agree with the fact that you should look for a sturdy laptop. manufacture warranties dont cover those little oopsies. I wouldn't suggest a dell or a sony. Their laptops tend to have a problems, such as crashing. Do you plan on carrying your laptop to class? if so you wont something light and compact. ( most students don't carry there laptop to class unless the course kinda makes it neccessary) If your laptop is only going to move from time to time then you can go with something a little larger that might have better processors, memory, video card and all that other stuff. you also want something with wireless internet capabilites. I have an hp pavillion and I have found it to be very reliable. I'd also recommend the macbook's. they are light, compact, and speedy. Macs typically dont have as many problems as pc's. they've also become more compatible with stuff in the pcworld. I also have friends who have a toshiba satellite; they love it. no matter what you choose to go with don't sacrifice function for price. If you dont invest in a good laptop, your gonna wish you had.

College Laptop?

Rose

I'm thinking of buying a laptop for college. Mainly it would be used for entertainment purposes (Facebook, Adding music to my ipod, youtube etc). But most importantly for saving projects for school. Which Laptop do you reccomend? There also might be some commuting ( to and from the library). Thanks!

Answer
You might want to check with your college for their suggestions; some colleges require Windows; some might require Macs; some may not care.

Here at ACU ( http://www.acu.edu ), Macs are VERY popular with the students, and most of the staff programmers/IT/Helpdesk folks have moved over to Macs in the past year also. In fact, ACU is giving out an iPhone or an iPod Touch (student's choice) to all incoming Freshmen this year. This will likely make the Mac an even more popular choice.

Short answer: whatever fits in best with your college.

But don't forget to look at the newest third category of lappy also, such as the eeePC ( http://eeepc.asus.com/global/ ).

What are some general life tips for an incoming college freshman?

Ginny

For dorm decorating, coping with homesickness, getting/staying organized, anything.

Any tips that anyone coming into college should know would be great :)

Answer
As far as decorating goes you definitely need:

a mini refrigerator

a chair for your desk (desk is usually provided)

sheets and linens (towels etc)

Organizational things like the little drawers to hold pencils and junk lol

Maybe a rug because the floor usually doesnt have carpet

If you want u can get a college chest that way you can lock up your valuables (trust me get one! and my mom still has hers and she's 40 lol she says it has memories)

Ummm go clothes shopping of course so you can have a more mature style

Maybe think about a flat screen computer monitor for your dorm with a mini mouse to hook up to your laptop when your there.

And of course maybe like posters and schools scarves and tshirts for your wall.

To not get homesick you should stay focused on school and get iinvolved with school activities. This is one of the funnest time of your life so dont let it go by without enjoying it!

To stay organized its simple stay ahead of everything. This is not high school so DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!
