Where can i buy a laptop for a high school student? under $400-$500.?

guardgirl

i need a laptop for my junior year of high school (1 online course, 3 ap classes, and Science olympiad) and i don't need the best, just something i can type, search the internet and such. should i buy online (any reliable sites?), wait for sales or what? i plan on getting a better one when i get to college.

Answer
best buy currently has a best offer of $399. hp laptop with 1 GB RAM and 180 GB hard drive. I think you can buy it from there if there is a best buy shop around there or you can buy it online at bestbuy.com

Best college student laptop?

Rhi

I am going to college in the fall with about $2500 for the semester. I still need to buy my books ( going to michigan state about $300- $400) I will need to get my own phone plan ( under 18 should be expensive too.) What is my best bet for buying a computer?

I really like the Mac books, normal white, but after installing programs it's about 1400. Or with cheaper programs about 1200. Is it worth it? What other good laptops are there?

I don't need anything for gaming. Just for basic internet use, files etc... College student needs.

Answer
Any laptop made in the last three years will do what you mention and they can be had for a third of the price of a new macbook. I would recommend something smaller and more portable so that it can be used in class and not stay in your dorm room. Some good models to look at that will be in the $400 - $600 range are HP 6510b, 6910p, and NC6400

You can save money on software by using open source / freeware software like Open Office instead of buying Microsoft Office. If you have to have Microsoft Office you can get a deal with a student discount through your college.

best laptop under $1000 for college student?

I'm going to college and will be studying engineering. I need a laptop under $1000 that will be usable for the next 4 years. I would like an i5 or i7 processor with a dedicated video card. Also a 7200rpm hard drive would be a lot better.

In my dorm I will be hooking it up to my monitor.
How is the ASUS N61JQ-X1

Answer
I don't think it would be necessary to spend $1k on a laptop, even for engineering.

I definitely saw some Core i5 laptops on http://www.craigslist.org that were new in box for $570 just a few days ago in my area... might want to take a look there and see if you can pick up a deal locally, first. Laptops never last as long as you want them to and it's best to save as much money as you can to make getting rid of it in the future less painful.

Edit: The N61JQ-X1 is too expensive. ASUS makes the most reliable laptops around hands-down, but you don't need the latest and greatest hardware. Everyone seems to believe that if they're doing intensive tasks that they need the absolute highest-end parts so it will run well, which is absolutely wrong; the i7 arrived too early and is too powerful for 95% of users. Save $300-400 and buy a Core 2 Duo or i5 system with a 2.4GHz+ clock speed and decent video card and you'll have more than enough processing power.

What would be the best, preferably under $400 for a college student taking online classes?

Q. I'm starting college and I signed up for some online classes and was wondering if anyone knew of a laptop that would work best for the classes and preferably under $400.

Answer
I have an hp pavillion g6 with these spec:

4gb ram, 1.9ghz AMD dual core processor, Windows 7 64 bit. It's about six and a half months old, but since I can't afford the internet connection, I am willing to sell it for less than $400. It's pretty much brand new.

And when I was in college this past spring, I took an online class with it, and it works perfectly. It's very fast.

HELP!!! laptop/tablet needed!!!?

XX]

. Im looking to buy a new laptop or tablet..i was looking into tablets sice their light and portable, but havnt found one(if there is any) with microsoft word installed....im a college student, so these requirments are crucial...please help

requirments:
1. HAS TO HAVE MICROSOFT WORD INSTALLED!!!
2. no bigger than 14"
3.has to be wifi capatible
4.needs to be under $400
5.needs to be new
6. cute and stylish is a plus***

Answer
You won't find a tablet with Word installed, unless it is a Windows based tablet and these are harder to find. Also, the Windows based tablets are quite expensive costing as much a good laptop. Most tablets are going to be running either IOS5(Apple), or Android. Since you are a college student and are probably going to need something Windows based and with a little more power than a tablet, I would recommend a good laptop. Unless you are an engineering student that is going to be running CAD/CAM type software, you will not need anything more than an Intel Core i3, AMD E-series,or AMD A-4. If running CAD, then you would need at least i5 or A-8. Here are some to consider that can be found at Best Buy. Unfortunately something 14" or less is going to cost more than $400.

HP Pavilion Model: dm1-4010us SKU: 3569026 $448.98
AMD E-Series Dual Core
11.6" display
4GB DDR3 RAM
320 GB Hard Drive

Sony Vaio Model: VPCYB33KX/B SKU: 3641499 $449.99
AMD E-Series Dual Core
11.6" display
2GB DDR3 RAM
320 GB Hard Drive

Acer Aspire One Model: AOD270-1679 SKU: 4776184 $279.99
Intel Atom Dual Core
10.1" display
1GB DDR3 RAM
320 GB Hard Drive

ASUS Model: X44L-BBK4 SKU: 3672031 $379.99
Intel Core i3
4GB DDR3 RAM
500 GB Hard Drive

The Asus above gives you the most bang for your buck and ASUS tends to be a very reliable brand.

I am soon going to be entering into a community college for my associate degree in computer programming, and i was wondering if I will need my own laptop for the papers and assignments etc. I won't be staying at the college I will be living at home. We do have a couple of laptops at home but both of them have problems (one doesn't connect to wifi and the other always have to be plugged in otherwise it will die), so that makes them immobile. Please help guys I am really confused as to should i buy a laptop or not. I don't want to come to college unprepared.

Serious answerers only, Thanks!

Answer
The rules vary by school and class, but most professors insist that laptops be shut and cell phones turned off while in class. However, there is time between classes, and often a laptop comes in handy to do some of the required homework and assignments during the day. Also, some work is done in libraries and having your own laptop is a big aid.
There are some private schools that actually give all students a laptop. That is to assure everyone has one and uniformity in connections to get and provide information for registration, etc.

A laptop is now considered an essential tool, just as a book and pen and paper are tools.
It doesn't need to be fancy, and portability (smaller) is a plus.

If you have a laptop not connecting to wifi you can buy a USB wireless adapter for about $15 at Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, Best Buy, Radio Shack, or other stores.

If the battery is worn on a laptop, you can buy a replacement battery.

With a degree and studies being in computer programming, though the classes may have desktop PCs in them, it is possible they will require you have a laptop.

Used and new laptops can be bought for under $300, though about $400 buys a lot more in performance, features, and reliability. For now, call it HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but later you may find it is required by your school. You can often call ahead and ask them, but they should be telling you soon enough. There are often back to school sales, and clearances are already occuring for the switch in Intel level cpus. May check a local Best Buy for their clearance items.

I'm hoping to stay under 400 but if it's worth it, 500 at most.
Also, what brands to stay away from and I prefer to have a 15" or so.

Answer
While this laptop will be in the upper range of your budget, I think it's well worth it. I recently bought a Gateway (a brand that's always treated me well and generally has great value for the price spent). Anyway, here it is: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+Laptop+with+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+X2+Dual-Core+Processor+-+Midnight+Blue/9695339.p?id=1218150605281&skuId=9695339&st=Laptops_Netbooks_Clearance_20100702&cp=1&lp=6

The reason that this particular laptop grabbed my attention was that it has a lot of RAM (4GB) and a pretty fast processor (2 GHz Dual-Core), in terms of laptops. Also, the monitor is great; 15.6" still seems like a nice, large size to the eyes, but is still small enough for easy storage; the monitor is also an LED monitor, which is the best type in viewing angles, lifespan/durability, and reducing eyestrain. The final reason was obviously the price; I've haven't seen too many laptops in this price range before that weren't on the junkier side, but this one is actually good quality.

Unfortunately, though, Best Buy hasn't seemed to have this laptop in stock for a while, so you may have to look for it at other websites or retailers. On a side note, this laptop also comes in Cherry Red; just letting you know that Midnight Blue isn't the only color.

In terms of brands to avoid, the first one I would suggest is Apple; besides having an advantage in battery life, the MacBook is basically just a really expensive laptop. Disappointingly few programs run on Mac OS X as well. I would also advise against many of HP's laptops, unless you're looking to get a really expensive one. HP's cheaper laptops are typically rather flimsy, especially the monitors.

I'm looking for a laptop for college. I want to take it to school. I go to Metro State. It's a commuter campus so I take the light rail. I want to write papers on it, I would like Microsoft Works. And I also want to put pictures and music.
What type of computer is better? Dell? HP? Apple? etc..
What should I look for when purchasing a laptop?
I want it to last all 4 years and even into grad school.
It must be affordable but quality is more important.
What do you recommend?
THanks!

Answer
Well, I'm also a metro rider. I went with a used Dell D-400. Got it off ebay and it has 1G ram, decent processor, burner, case, etc. total price was $260 (including shipping). The key is that it has a 12.1 inch screen so it fits easy on the lap while riding. Also lasts about 2 hours on battery.

So my suggestion would be a used dell if you want to be under $400 or so. New small laptops are $1,200+. MAC of course is good but expensive. The thing with Dell is there is always a ton of parts available for them should you have a problem or break it. Now, XP is not sold any longer as an operating system but is still widely used. I don't care for Vista and I'm not even sure if my laptop would run it. But I do basic spreadsheets and word docs, surf internet and maybe burn music with it. So even though xp may not be used in the next 4 years, I'll be fine. People still can get by usign Windows 98!

Just be very careful if buying a laptop off of ebay. Pay attention to seller feedback!

Good luck.

ps - as for HP, I did look at them as well, but they don't seem to hold up as much and the small ones are really expensive. My company has 1000's of dells in service with minimal problems.

I am looking for a new laptop and on a college students budget unforchantly lol.
I play online games such as minecraft and perfect world and maybe thinking about diablo III, i just want one that will run decently without over heating. Thank you, any ideas will be helpful.

Answer
Here's a great laptop for the price (400): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Inspiron-17R-7110-17-3-Intel-i3-2-10-GHz-GT-525M-6-GB-500-GB-Black-/170926619349?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item27cc053ad5
Please note all computers are from ebay, only way you'll get what you want.

It has a GT525m gpu (better than integrated) and a i3 2310m (good). It is used but in good condition. I'm not personally selling it but the seller has 100% positive feedback (great). I highly recommend this buy, it's a great deal.

The first Dell is ancient? It's still being sold from Dell.

And I know in most cases it's a bad idea however this gpu is known to overclock well and isn't hot.

I would never recommend overclocking a laptop in any way unless I knew the cooling was adequate. My friend owns the second laptop listed, I know what I'm talking about. His is actually slower than the one listed.

This might be able to do what you need: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Latitude-D830-2-5GHz-T9300-Quadro-NVS-140M-256MB-500GB-4GB-WUXGA-DVDRW-XP-/220904096021?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item336ee90115

It's really good for the money, I recommend overclocking the GPU though (the 140 is known for overclocking well, just don't go crazy).

I'd personally overclock it to these levels:
Core 475mhz
Ram 700mhz IF the ram is at 600mhz already
Shader 950

To overclock you'll need an overclocking tool but you can easily find that online.

If things get glitchy after overclocking just lower the clock speeds 5mhz at a time still it's stable.

If you don't care about screen size then this would perform better but with a smaller screen:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Latitude-E6400-Intel-C2D-P8700-2-53Ghz-250GB-4GB-Nvidia-NVS-160M-Win-7-Pro-/281001209877?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item416cfa301

Andy clearly doesn't understand what "under 500" means hahaha. I know the laptops I listed weren't the best but they are great computers for the price. The people that disliked probably have Core i7 laptops that couldn't even comprehend having a Core 2 Duo in their system despite it being a decent processor. Ignore the dislikes, please. I know what I'm talking about, if you wanted a $520 laptop I would suggest something different but that wasn't what you wanted. Maybe if people READ what you wanted they wouldn't be giving me thumbs downs.
