I will being going to college in 2014, and I desperately need a new laptop. Any suggestions?

Sonya

I really want a laptop that can support most games on average settings as well as function well for a college student, however money is an issue. The the absolute max is $2,000, but I would prefer $1,500 or under. Thanks in advance!

Answer
1500? Definetley the HP Pavillion DV6, great laptop for gaming and anything else, or an Asus.

Borrowing additional student loan money during the semester allowed?

Eve ill

I applied for and received a $4500 subsidized loan for fall 2013 and spring/summer 2014 and found that this is not enough. I am working part-time, and attending classes full time. My school says the cost of attendance is roughly $18100. After doing my budget, and according to the fafsa's estimated household contribution, I realize I need about another $4000 (since I'm at the max borrowing limit for subsidized, I will have to take out the $4000 I need as unsubsidized.) This money will have to go towards a new laptop I need to take a certain class, along with gas money and other things for school. I grossly underestimated what I would need when I first applied, and fall semester nearly killed me financially.

Do colleges even grant loan requests in the middle of an academic year after the semester has already begun? Would I even be able to get the loan during spring or would I have to wait for summer? Help from either a fin aid rep or another student who has done this would be appreciated.

Answer
It depends on whether you still have eligibility. Federal student loans have annual loan limits. If you received $4,500 in a subsidized loan, you are probably a sophomore. If that's the case, then you may still have another $2,000 in unsubsidized eligibility left, but only your school can give you an accurate answer because only they know all the factors that effect your eligibility. If you don't have any federal eligibility left, you can still apply for a private student loan, up to the cost of attendance. Private student loans are credit bases, however, so students often need to obtain a co-signer.

College Fall 2014, whats the best laptop to get??

Nicholas

I want it to be durable and last me over 4years without slowing down and crashing and i want the specs like whats the processor and ram and stuff. Thanks!

Answer
1. What is your budget?

You could spend $300 on a laptop or $3000 on a high end convertible tablet like I had to as an engineering student.

Which laptop is best is entirely dependent on how much you are willing to spend.

I filed for fafsa for the 2013-2014 school year and I was wondering, so I received $41,710, my schools tuition is $36,823 per year, when I got my financial estimate they didn't use all the money towards my tuition, and I want to know why not? Also what's happening to the rest of the money? I REALLY need it to pay for college, I'm a 1st generation and Im paying for college on my own, and I need all the money I can get.. HELP

Answer
I am going to assume you're classified as an independent student, or that otherwise, the EFC of your family is zero. If it is non-zero, then it is simply assumed by the government that they're going to be chipping in that much to cover the cost of your education, which includes tuition and all associated fees, as well as living expenses*.

The additional money covers things like:
- Student fees
- Loan processing fees (0% to 4% depending on type of loan, etc.)
- Your living expenses (rent, food, etc.)
- Other student-related expenses like textbooks
- (If you request it etc. you can generally get more money in order to purchase a reasonably priced laptop, providing various conditions are met)

Given that you're left with $4,887, I'd imagine that that your family is expected as per formulas to contribute a considerable amount to your education, or that you have other sources of aid. Unless maybe you're living on-campus, in which case that sounds approximately 'right' given how much estimates can vary*.

Note(*): The non-tuition and fees portion of the student budget often makes little actual sense. Expect it to either considerably over-estimate your other expenses, or considerably under-estimate those expenses. Heck, you can often do some fun comparisons (given that the official budget will enumerate things like rent) for different degree level students at your school, and be surprised that for students living off campus, medical students, law students, other graduate students, and undergraduate students are often budgeted wildly different amounts for things like rent, even when controlling for months the student will be living in the area, and that these variations often make no sense at all. For example, one might guess that undergraduate students can endure a lower standard of living because they're younger, and because they'll generally make less money than a doctor after graduation (even if we consider mere resident salaries), but it's generally the case that medical students will be budgeted significantly *less* money than undergraduates to cover rent, whereas doctoral students (or at least those that aren't fully-funded and are actually loaning money) are budgeted significantly more than undergraduate students and medical students, even though this too, makes no sense.

I'm a college student and carrying around a laptop and text books and a notebook is getting really heavy and a lot of pounds on my back so i want to buy a tablet.
Here what i'm looking for
-Something that i can take notes on in class
-Light weight
-Being able to download eBooks (textbooks) on

If you know of another good tablet other then the two i mentioned please let me know!

Answer
I would say the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 or the Galaxy Note 8.0. The 10.1 is epic, but unfortunately carries a $600 price tag. It is great for taking notes though and you can eaily download ebooks. It you can't afford that though, then go for the 8.0, which is just as capable, but slower and smaller. If you can't even afford that, the go for the Nexus 7 2013, which I would not recommend for what you want to do, but it is only $230. If you can't afford that then you should not buy a tablet.

Would getting this laptop be worth it?

I need a new laptop and I was going to get a really nice Dell off of Amazon w/ Windows 7 Home Premium because I don't like the new Windows 8 but today I saw that Microsoft will not support Windows 7 by January 12, 2015. Well that means I would spend around $600 for this laptop plus I was going to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional for $80.00. So that's around $700.00 + in total, (USD) for only 2 years. Would it be worth it? Will Microsoft no longer be supporting Windows 7 by 2015? Should I just get a Windows 8 laptop?

Here's the URL to where I read MS will not support Windows 7: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/how-long-will-microsoft-support-xp-vista-and-windows-7/2304.

Here's the URL to the laptop (I don't think you'll need it but..yeah): http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i15R-2105sLV-15-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0081YPVHE/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362951892&sr=1-5&keywords=Dell+Inspiron+15+R+Windows+7

Thanks in advanced. :)

Answer
ok, that zdnet article is wrong if it says windows 7 and xp support form microsoft is ending. prior history and common sense say otherwise. especially now, because alot of college students and younger people are just as comfortable with linux and android, microsoft is not going to tick off its customer base. there is no reason why if someone bought a laptop one day before windows 8 launched that microsoft will not support windows 7. windows 2000 ceased to be installed on new pc's in 2001. customer support for windows 2000 ended in 2006. xp will continue to be supported until 2014. vista will continue to be supported till 2017( i am installing vista on my new laptop). both of those havent been installed on new pc's in years. so windows 7 support wont end for a long long time. anyone who says other wise is an idiot. the best place to get info is microsoft's support web site. as for that laptop, it isnt a good deal. i recommend this one, bump up the processor to an amd a10, and this laptop is not only superior to the dell,it is cheaper. and the ten dollar battery upgrade is well worth it i think. contact me if you need more help. jdbj32m@yahoo.com

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/usstudents/StdAffinityPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=37&Code=E535_BASE_SAP

as proof, here is the microsoft web page showing xp is still being supported by microsoft until 2014.

Becoming an independent student...?

best laptops for college students 2014

best laptops for college students 2014 image

I have been going to college since 2007. I have only went part time, so its taking me longer. This semester, I am a full time student. I am getting less money being a full time student, then I was when I was a part time student (over $1200 less). Well today I got an email from my school that said that I can no longer get student loans because I have reached my limit for a dependent student. I currently live with my mom because I do not have a job. I had a job when I first started school and they would not let me off to go to class so I had to quit since I was getting Dâs and Fâs. I am now getting Aâs and Bâs. Financial Aid has told me that if I get below a C-, there is a chance I will no longer get financial aid. I am unable to pay for school myself. I was raised by a single mother and she is currently only getting $200 a month altogether, and that barely covers our rent.

What I was wondering is will I get more money if I label myself as an independent and move out on my own? Can I be labeled a dependent student in the fall and independent in the winter? I am currently only getting $1,000 for a refund. My textbooks cost anywhere from $300-400. I am in need of a laptop, but was unable to because I had to help my mom on her electric bill. Iâm also in a dilemma because I live an hour away from my school. I was having vehicle problems so I decided to take online classes, but there are certain classes required for my degree that are only offered online. I drive a minivan, which sucks up gas so it will cost me about $20-30 per day I go on campus. But because I am getting such a decline in my refund, Iâm not sure if I will even be able to go to the campus.

I am 23 years old and I would love to live out on my own because as an only child, I am becoming too dependent on my mother. So If I move out on my own and become and independent student, will I be able to get student loans?
Thanks, I didn't realize that. I turn 24 January 15th so maybe I will receive more aid in the Fall of 2013 so I can take classes on campus.

Answer
you can't "label yourself as independent"
even if you are not a dependent per IRS, you will still be a dependent for FAFSA until you are over 24

FAFSA will show an exact date for 2012-2013 academic year it was: born before Jan, 1 1989

so for 2013-2014 it will say: born before Jan. 1, 1990

no, you can't change your dependency status in mid-academic year

you can find a job that will not interfere with school.... for example, my bf works as an overnight security guard. He works 28 hours per week while in school 18 credit hours. Look for any job where you work over-night & then you don't have to worry about scheduling... you just have to be very good at time management & working in time to sleep.

this is info on FAFSA dependent vs independent student: http://www.fafsa.com/understanding-fafsa/fafsa-dependency
