I just got a new laptop for school. I will be starting college in the fall and am currently a high school student. I was wondering if I should get Microsoft 2010 or 2013.

2013, you will get used to it soon enough, its faster, and as you are entering college it will be best to have the latest software as technology outdates VERY quickly these days :)
In my opinion 2013 is better anyway, but its up to you, I strongly suggest you take 2013 as there might be a new thing invented only compatible with that and you will regret your decision otherwise, better safe than sorry

Which laptop should I get for college?

I'll be a freshman pre-med student in the Fall of 2013, so I'll be needing a laptop. My parents say I have to pay $500 up front, and they'll take care of the rest. The only thing I'm torn between is which one should I get? My two possible options are a 15" Macbook Pro or an Alienware M14x, both of which are fully upgraded to their maximum customizable specifications (from the factory at least).

--Macbook Pros (no pun intended): Looks nicer, lighter, OSX + Windows, better battery, works better with my iPad and iPhone, made by Apple, everyone has them
--Macbook Cons: Very expensive ($2300 maxed out, not including warranty), lower quality gaming, expensive accessories, inferior specs
--Alienware Pros: Cheaper ($1750 maxed out with warranty), MUCH better gaming, easier to upgrade
--Alienware Cons: Made by Dell, bulkier, heavier, less battery life, lower resolution, no OSX support

As you can see, they're both quite enticing, especially because I enjoy playing games like WarZ, FSX, Arma, Skyrim, etc. So the big question is, if you were a nerdy college student who likes to play games but also needs a little mobility to go to the library and places, which one would you get?

I'm leaning towared the Macbook, since it can play games pretty well while having a decent battery, mobility, reliability, and looks. What do you think of my choice?

Whomever said HP laptops weren't good doesn't know much about the industry.

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.
Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.
Sony hardware has generally been good, but they are notorious for putting huge amounts of crapware/bloatware on machines and gathering information on their consumers without their knowledge or permission.
Toshiba has bottomed the rankings. Personally, I have used them and never had a problem, but that does not appear to be the case any more.

The things you need to be thinking about in getting a laptop:
If you are going to be carrying it around a lot, you want one that is lightweight with a good battery. See if you can't find one with a Haswell i-series processor as they have much better battery life.

What makes one laptop different from another? One of the big things is the keyboard: do you need a full sized keyboard or can you work with smaller keys? Do you like the chicklet style keys or something more substantial? Do you care if the keys are backlit? Do you need/want a number pad on the right? Do you want a point stick instead of or in addition to a touchpad? While some people want to buy a certain laptop because it looks cool, cool looks do not always lend themselves to comfortable or effective use and these types of considerations are far more important in day to day use than the latest/sleekest styles ... YMMV.

Based on the two processors mentioned, the Intel i5 would be better as you can be able to multitask and work with your custom software seamlessly - especially if you'll pair it up with a good graphics card and RAM. You will also be able to do more like play games and use it for entertainment.

How can i get money for transportation with my student loans?
Okay my estimate for my pell grant is: 5,500 and staford loan: 10500.
I'm signing up for summer 2 and i'm going to need transportation and a laptop.
How would I go about getting this? Who do i ask for the money? Like i have no idea what to do.

before you make plans based on your federal financial aid, you need to know & understand
1) that is annual, you only mention 1 semester/quarter
2) the annual amount is broken into semesters (usually Fall & Spring) or quarters (usually Fall, Winter, and Spring)
3) your summer semester might be at the end of 2012-2013 academic year, if it is & you did not go fall & spring, then the maximum you could use of 2012-2013 fin aid is 1/2
4) you only get the semester/quarter maximum pell grant if you are enrolled full-time & student loans if you are enrolled at least 6 credit hours..... so, if your summer is on the end of 2012-2013 & you did not use any fin aid for fall & spring... and you only go 6 credit hours, then you would get up to 50% of the annual loan amount & up to 25% of the annual pell grant amount


the aid will be applied to tuition & fees first, also books if you charge them to your fin aid... if there is any left over then you can use that for bus fare or gas money as well as school supplies

the vast majority of college students don't actually need a laptop & you can always use computers at the school's library & various computer labs

final note.... if your school has not processed your aid to the point of Financial Aid Award (this tells you exactly what your semester/quarter maximum is that you could get as a full-time student)..... then your aid might not be in place in time for you to start that semester/quarter -- it takes most community colleges at least 8 weeks to process & universities longer

I have been doing a lot of research on different laptop brands, but I was just curious what some of your opinions would be. I am about to be a freshman college student, and I have never owned a laptop before. That being said, I want something that is CHEAP (so Apple MacBooks are out of the question), but not cheap in quality. My maximum budget is about $800.

These are some of my must-haves:
14"-15" screen (preferably touchscreen)
Windows 8
Intel i3 or i5 processor (not familiar with AMD processors)
Optical DVD-RW Drive: for watching movies and burning discs
Webcam and Microphone
Backlit keyboard
Good tech support

Storage capacity doesn't matter, since I will be purchasing a separate external hard drive with it.

Software I will be purchasing with it:
Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013
McAfee Total Protection Security

I've been looking into the Lenovo, Sony, and Dell computers. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks

Depends on what you want if you want durability, buy Dell. DELL has recently good computers that don't break very easily and when they do dell support is awesome.

Lenovo is a very professional brand, everything will run fine, and durability is good too, usually,so is battery life on their,laptops

Acer is good,for ultrabooks and other thin long battery life laptops

I would steer clear of hp and sony

I'm attending a NAIA school fall of 2013. I will be living on campus and it is over 700 miles away from home. What should I bring to school? I had my clothes and money ready kinda. What should I really bring to survive?

Aside from any personal athletic equipment you'll need, your list will be the same as any other student. Sometime in the spring or summer, your school will probably send you a list of suggested items to bring, as well as what NOT to bring (some schools don't allow certain items in the dorms). And once you find out your roommate, you can discuss who is going to bring what (you'll only need one refrigerator, TV, etc). But for starters, here are some things that most college students bring to school:

Clothes
Outerwear (coat, hat, gloves, etc. for cold weather)
Umbrella
Swimsuit
Toiletries (shampoo, soap, razor, shaving gel, etc)
Towels, washcloth, robe, shower shoes
Stuff for your bed: mattress pad, extra-long twin sheets, pillow, blanket, etc
Laundry Bag or Basket, laundry soap
Alarm Clock
Computer/Laptop
Printer
Ethernet Cables
Extension Cords
Stereo/speakers
TV, game system
Mini Refrigerator
Coffee Pot, microwave, etc. (if allowed)
Plates, cups, utensils, cookware
Desk Lamp
Desk supplies (stapler, scissors, tape, pencil sharpener, etc)

Once you get to school, you'll be surprised how many little things you took for granted at home, that you suddenly realize you need but didn't think to bring... nail clippers, flashlight, thermometer, etc. Since you have several months before you leave, start a list for yourself. Write down the things you use now and that you think you'll probably need at college.
