Is the Student Laptop deal with the Free 4GB Xbox worth it?

Q. I'm looking for a gaming laptop which will last for a while.

Are any of the computers which come with the free 4GB Xbox worth getting when it comes to specs?

Answer
Just so you know, you have to be a college student for this promotion. As far as your actual question: unless I misunderstood, you can but any computer priced at over $700 (an easy mark to hit for a gaming laptop). My logic is that if you would already be buying a new laptop by itself, then the Xbox is an added bonus, but I don't like the idea of spending 700 dollars I wasn't going to spend for a $200 xbox.

I'm a science student who deals with graphics I also want to collect music, burn DVDs and CDs. I'm confused whether I should get a pentium 4 processor or some other type. Can somebody help me PLEASE! I need major enlightenment- a detailed answer as soon as possible.

Answer
I personally recommend a Pentium dual core.
avoid "celeron" as they are a stripped down version of a Pentium.

I don't know how much you have to spend, but for a good laptop they are very expensive, at least the really good ones are.
If you have enough money I would get a "very good" desk / tower computer and a very cheep laptop and have them synchronized, or your own personal net. Even though its a cheep laptop be sure and get WiFi built in.
That way if you lose or drop (Yes it happens) your laptop you don't lose all your data.

Hard drive replaced in laptop. How to get microsoft office back?

Sandra

Hi
My laptop (Dell Inspiron N5110) would not turn on and the hard drive needed to be replaced. Because of this all files have been wiped from the laptop.
I have managed to get my norton account back and other files that were backed up. However, I am unable to get my microsoft office package back. It was a student deal so I got other programs free with it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Answer
When you purchase MS Office Student you received a product key code for it and you will need that to re-register MS Office Student, Did you install MS Office Student from disc or download from Microsoft? If from disc just re install on the laptop, if downloaded from Microsoft download it again and use the product key you originally received to re register the software. If you have a problem contact Microsoft support or the school or place you got MS Office from. You are allowed to re install Microsoft software onto the same computer it is originally installed on with out purchasing a new product key code.

What would be the best non-mac laptop for a college student going to college for a degree in graphic design?

Starting college next year and need a laptop. Don't want a mac cause i have a Zune and i don't like the format (even though i hear there the best for design). Any hints or help is appreciated!

Answer
You will be fine on a Mac with graphic design. You'll likely mainly be relying on the Adobe and Quark lineups anyway. And they are all well designed for the PC, so no big deal.

I would factor in buying Windows 7 when it comes out in the Fall. I'm assuming you can't wait on buying a laptop until then. But I would defiintely budget in buying that. It should help whatever laptop you do buy a lot by being light years more efficient than Vista currently is.

I would look at maybe an HP 6z or 16t series laptop. Make sure to get Wireless N card (I think the 6z needs an upgrade) and a big hard drive (320GB should serve you well). I think those would be a good choice and be reasonably affordable. Also I think they both happen to come with HDMI output. So you can port your laptop out to an HDTV (not a bad way to say look at a logo blown up to a large scale).

I am looking for a good laptop for my brother as a high school grad gift. I am not sure as to what type of laptop that he would need. Looking at an HP and a Toshiba 15" screen both have 4GB RAM and 320GB hard drive. Suggestions?

Answer
I have a Mac Book Pro, and its awesome.. If you get Microsoft word your set (Student Edition is Cheapest i think ) Even a regular Mac book would do, thats what everyone at college has nowadays. I got a great deal on mine and it came with a free ipod touch and printer :)

How often does Apple offer rebates?

Jellybean

I just missed the student deal with the mac + free iPod in my country.

Now I need a new laptop.. so does anyone know how often the Apple site offers deals/rebates?

Answer
Why do you need a Mac? it is no different from a Dell Hp, or any other intel laptop. the thing that makes a mac is the OS/x operating system not the hardware, Next you will be running windows on it, 95% of mac users do because they can't use anything but windows anyway.

If you buy a Mac your are stuck with Mac proprietary hardware and software users license meaning you can't do what you want, you have to do what mac will allow and tell you to do with your own computer,

When it comes to Proprietary Hardware you are at the mercy of the manufacture (MAC) you have to buy their Hardware and accessories , You have to buy their software, You have to have it repaired with Mac or one of their agents, this keeps the price of everything sky high for the Mac consumers.

If you still want a mac they will be selling their system cheaper next month Now that Linux systems are coming out with Google Linux Andriod and Moblin operating systems Mac now know that to compete they will have to drop their prices, Both Apple Mac and Microsoft know by the end of this year Linux is going to hit them hard. both in the computer and phone market

Why you may ask, simple Linux Operating System and Software is Free Linux puts OS/x and windows to shame You need to do some serious research before you go out and spend a fortune on a mac

Is it illegal for a teacher to video the students with their laptop webcam in class?

Is it illegal for a teacher to video the students with their laptop webcam without students permission.
We have a math teacher that does this and it's really creepy and makes us feel uncomfortable. So is it illegal?

Answer
Cassie needs to read the definition of pedophilia. Simply video taping students does not make the person a pedophile.

As for your question, it depends on what the purpose of video taping is and what your district's policy is for videoing students. If the teacher wants to use this online or for a portfolio he/she needs signed permission-at least in my district and probably yours.

I record my students all the time. I use it to record their behavior to show their parents so that their parents understand what I am dealing with in the classroom. I record them working or playing then show it to them. They get a kick out of it.

I am going to enter my college year next summer. I wonder what is the most suitable laptop for business student because I have heard that mac is not really appropriate. Someone told me that there were some business application which could not run on apple. Is that true ?

Answer
It depends on your price range. You can get a well equipped HP for about $500-600. It'll take care of day to day usage and it'll handle a good number of video games (whether you play them or not, that's usually a good benchmark). In my opinion HP is your best deal right now, they're decently priced and they're good, stable builds. I had a Dell laptop and desktop, both are currently sitting in my closet and I'm now using HP desktops and laptops. I don't like Macs at all, and the only fields they really excel in are graphic/video editing.

It also depends on how portable you need it to be. You can get a very small ultra-portable laptop for around $300, but they usually don't have CD or DVD drives and they're really just for the basics.

Keep in mind, laptops are very hard to upgrade, so don't sell yourself short and buy something just because it's cheap, you'll regret it later on. Shoot for at least a 1.6 - 2 GHz processor and at least 2GB of RAM (You can get away with 1, but I'd recommend at least 2). A hard drive at least 100 GB is plenty for most people, but if you can get a good deal get as big of a Hard Drive as possible. Graphics card doesn't really matter unless you want to play games.
