Help finding a laptop for college? I'm a film production student.?

Okay, here are the things I would like for it to have.

- I'm a PC.
- A firewire port so that I can upload footage from my video camera
- Enough memory to support a good amount of video, as well as my music (around 5,000 songs). I also have an external harddrive, but I'd like to keep the use of that to a minimum because I've heard too many stories of them breaking.
- Not Vista. I hate vista. I really like my desktop which is windows XP, but I know it's older so it may be harder to find a newer laptop with XP.

Thanks for your help! I'm going to keep looking around, but if you could throw out some recommendations that'd be super helpful.

any modern laptop with a dual core or better cpu and more than 4gb memory and 500Gb hard drive will do what you want windows seven can run a virtual XP O/S so it will feel the same but you may have trouble finding a firewire port and may need a pcmcia card with firewire, for processing video any laptop will be much slower than a good desktop

For Macs? The best discount is for education (students, teachers, school employees). Apple really don't give out too many discounts. Only other discount is through a business that do heavy business with Apple and only then it's for employees of that business only.

What is the best laptop for a film student?

I'm really looking at either a Dell (probably XPS series?) or a MacBook Pro. My film school mostly uses AVID, but there's nothing wrong with using Final Cut Pro/learning it for future use. However, I'm not incredibly familiar with Macs. Is it hard switching over from a PC to a Mac? Would a Dell work better?

Other brand recommendations are okay, too.
Okay, I'm looking at a Dell XPS M1530, HP dv4t/5t, or MacBook Pro. Will customize & upgrade. What's the best? :x

ok im no expert with computers or anything, much less with film...but i have recenlty switched from pc to mac and i love it. after a while you get used to the mac and all the programs, for me are easier to use and stuff. now that i use a pc its kind of weird cuz it doenst seem as easy to use as my mac.. if i were u i would go with the mac... hope i was somewhat helpful haha

Hey everyone. I'm going into film school and I am trying to pick out a laptop that would suit my artistic needs (making my own movies on the computer, editing photos, mixing music, typical artsy stuff) and that I can use for school assignments. Of course I want it to be reliable and hardy. I don't really know a lot about computers sooooo maybe I could get some help?? I am leaning towards Apple stuff because I really like their products (don't we all..?) and I was taking a look at the MacBook Pro.

Any suggestions or advice, please??

I am an Apple hater, so I will admit there is some bias here, but my advice in sincere. If you have used Apple video editing / multimedia software before and you love it, then by all means take a look at MBP's. If you have not yet committed yourself, consider a PC laptop. You will get everything you need, I guarantee it. There is blatantly inferior hardware in Apple products compared to price equivalent PC's, the only reason people buy macs at all is because "emergerd Apple" and some people like the iOS better and like the software better, but even then there are equally great Windows software.

Choice is yours mate, ask some of your film makers friends and they might swing more towards a mac, but from a hardware/value standpoint macs are pretty paperweights.

Wow, two spams so far as your answers. Go with the MacBook Pro. I have a MacBook, the smaller screen is a problem if you are a serious film student. My son-in law has the 15" MacBook Pro, I can notice the difference. The 17" would be even better, and get the biggest hard drive you can afford.

My current laptop was state of the art in 2002 (an Alienware laptop) and I bought it used 1 1/2 years ago. I'm starting to think it's time to get a new one but feel silly replacing it.

For someone in a technology heavy feild, how long should a computer last.

No easy answer. It lasts as long as it serves your purposes.

Since you want to keep it for a while (and why not? they're expensive), load up on ram and a big hard drive when you get one. And get a fast processor. (But ram is the biggest consideration; don't skimp.)

As long as it runs your apps, and it's got a supported operating system, keep it. My guess is the limiting factor in your field will be if you can run the applications you need. If not, price a hardware upgrade before you completely replace it.

Ok, that's the long answer. In a tech-heavy field, probably 3 years.

i have been searching whats best a pc or mac i see a lot of awesome sony and toshiba laptops that have awesome power and graphics but they have like 3 hours of battery life and macs have like 7 hours i think and the programs that apple has for edition are awesome.

Definitely a macbook pro!

Mac Pros are expensive, macbook pros are portable and have the most advanced video editing software including iMovie. HOWEVER, if you are going to film school and are there for video editing, you probably will need to make an investment into getting "Final Cut Studio" which costs about $1000 but is the most advanced video editing software on the market. It is created by Apple and is only compatible on macs. Many in hollywood use Final Cut. It is a very important video editing tool.

is it possible to use a final cut pro 6 serial number twice?

I'm a broke film student and I don't have any cash to but FCP 6. I was on Ebay and some one is selling back-up copy's of FCP 6, but you will need a serial number in order to work. I know some people that have FCP 6, so would it work if I use their serial number?

Very, very doubtful, my licence covers up to 3 uses, but only on one computer at a time.

When I 'tried' to instal it on my laptop (I'm like that) it was rejected.
