Can't you use business laptops for home/college?

Kiran M

Dell's site is divided into home/business. But the business laptops like Latitude can actually be configured well to what I desire (2.4GHc C2D 3MB L2, 4GB RAM, 120GB 7200 rpm, 256 MB Video). Can't I just use that for my college? Why is so strictly classified under business???

Answer
Originally, the Inspirons were the consumer line of laptops that were more mutlimedia and entertainment oriented, and the Latitudes were designed to be business laptops that were more rugged, had networking capabilities, and no frills like special cases. But the lines have overlapped quite a bit. I think the latitudes still tend to be more sturdy built whereas the Inspirons feel "less solid".
And now there's also the XPS line with are suppose to be fully loaded high end systems.

But now, the main differences between the different lines is software options, warranty, and ordering methods. Ordering through the business line requires an account, and especially if it's a large business making lots of orders get special treatment from the salespeople.

Laptop for college - business?

This fall, I'll be goin to NIU and majoring in business. My recently got a Dell mini 9 and I'm wondering if that would be ok? If not, what would be the best?

Answer
The Dell Mini 9 is ok if all your going to be doing is surfing the web and altering a few docs here and there but if you're majoring in business I would guess you're going to be spending alot of time working on various types of docs and spreadsheets so I would go for something a little bit more substantial.

The Dell 15" Studio or the Inspiron should be fine for your requirements, bear in mind you will need to factor in Microsoft Office software but you should be able to get a student discount on this if you speak to your university.

Hope this helps!

Good Laptops for College!!?

alexander

Okay i just want to know whats a good laptop for college im going to be majoring in English, so im guessing im going to be writting a lot of papers...

So please leave good feed back also money is not an issue..
I was thinking of a Mac since i like them better, but i just want what will be more better & i heard the Mac Book Pro is good & i just saw the Mac Book Air & it looks nice, but dont know all that much about laptos..
I also wouldnt mind a PC.

Answer
Macs are very good computers are usually quite reliable. They are very pricey compared to pc's however and very few businesses or your professors will be using one, so it will probably be better to go with a pc. If you were only going to be using it for yourself and not school work, or business I would say go with the Mac. If you decide to go with a pc, there is a new line of processor made by AMD that just hit the market last month. It is called the AMD A-series and is based on the new Llanos platform. I would recommend going with one of them. The A-series like the Intel Sandy Bridge processors has the ability to change the clock speed to match the task at hand. They also have graphics capabilities fused right into the cpu, but unlike the Core i chips the graphics are far superior. For example, you cannot play most of today's more demanding games on the i series chips without a discrete graphics card in your computer. The A-series can play even the most demanding games such as Crysis 2 to at least the mid level graphics settings using only the integrated graphics. The A-series also generally has better battery life and runs 5-15 degrees cooler on average than the Intel processors. Here are a few to take a look at:

HP - Pavilion Laptop Model: g4-1117dx | SKU: 2715258 $399.99 at Best Buy
****************************************************************************************
AMD A-Series dual-core A4-3300M* accelerated processor
4GB DDR3 memory
Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support
14" LED high-definition widescreen display
320GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
AMD Radeon HD 6480G discrete-class graphics

ASUS K53TA-BBR6 15.6" Laptop $479.99 at Best Buy
****************************************************************
AMD® Fusion APU A6-3400M Processor Quad Core
4 GB DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM
15.6" 16:9 HD (1366x768) LED Backlight Display
Super-Multi DVD Optical Drive
500GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
AMD Radeon® HD 6720G Discrete-Class Graphics

Lenovo - Ideapad Laptop Model: 129922U | SKU: 2817228 $529.99 at Best Buy
*******************************************************************************************
AMD A4 3300M* processor Dual Core
4GB DDR3 memory
Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive
15.6" LED-backlit high-definition display
500GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
ATI Radeon HD 6480M discrete-class graphics

Toshiba - Satellite Laptop Model: L775D-S7210 | SKU: 2805001 $579.99 at Best Buy
**************************************************************************************************
AMD quad-core accelerated processor A6-3400M*
4GB DDR3 memory
Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support
17.3" LED-backlit TFT-LCD high-definition widescreen display
640GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
AMD Radeon HD 6520M discrete-class graphics

****NOTE*** of those I listed the ASUS and Toshiba models tend to be of better quality. Also, the A-4 is similar to the i3, A-6 is similar to i5, and A-8 is similar to i7

** Another bonus with the Macs is a free 8GB ipod (after rebate) on the new nanos or itouch...which would be nice b/c my old mp3 is ready to bite the dust.

Kelly

I have to get a laptop for college... Any recommendations?????
I know just the basics about computers. I was thinking of getting a Dell, what do you think? If so what model?
I'm also looking at a price range around $400.

btw Im not big on Mac books :/
I want something that is Fast, good for school work, has a nice webcam and speakers, and has plenty of memory for music and photos with plenty to spare.

Answer
Go with ASUS. It's well known brand and they have business all over the world. For your budget of around $400, check ASUS A53E-AS31 15.6-Inch Laptop
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-A53E-AS31-15-6-Inch-Laptop-Black/dp/B007MW13YG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&tag=basebal-20&ie=UTF8&qid=1341815957&sr=1-1&keywords=B007MW13YG
Specs:
- Intel Core i3 processor
- 4GB RAM
- 750GB hard drive
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

This is great use notebook with massive 750GB hard drive to store photos, music, videos and documents. There's webcam - which can used for video chatting using Google Chat or Skype. There's HDMI port for hooking the display screen on your HDTV and full numeric keypad.

Why release Vista and not to long after release windows 7?

I am currently using Vista on my laptop for college and online trading...How does Vista and windows 7 compare and which would be better as an operating system for business and school ONLY? Is one better then the other? Please only answer if you have used both and can make a reasonable comparison. I would like to know if it is worth upgrading to 7 or not. Thank you!

Answer
Partially because Vista was way behind schedule. That's why XP was the standard for so long. Additionally, Vista had so many problems, so Microsoft decided to release Win7 as soon as possible, after thoroughly testing it with the world's largest open beta test of an OS.

By the way, I highly recommend upgrading to Win7.

what is the best laptop for business student ?

Aline

I am going to enter my college year next summer. I wonder what is the most suitable laptop for business student because I have heard that mac is not really appropriate. Someone told me that there were some business application which could not run on apple. Is that true ?

Answer
It depends on your price range. You can get a well equipped HP for about $500-600. It'll take care of day to day usage and it'll handle a good number of video games (whether you play them or not, that's usually a good benchmark). In my opinion HP is your best deal right now, they're decently priced and they're good, stable builds. I had a Dell laptop and desktop, both are currently sitting in my closet and I'm now using HP desktops and laptops. I don't like Macs at all, and the only fields they really excel in are graphic/video editing.

It also depends on how portable you need it to be. You can get a very small ultra-portable laptop for around $300, but they usually don't have CD or DVD drives and they're really just for the basics.

Keep in mind, laptops are very hard to upgrade, so don't sell yourself short and buy something just because it's cheap, you'll regret it later on. Shoot for at least a 1.6 - 2 GHz processor and at least 2GB of RAM (You can get away with 1, but I'd recommend at least 2). A hard drive at least 100 GB is plenty for most people, but if you can get a good deal get as big of a Hard Drive as possible. Graphics card doesn't really matter unless you want to play games.

How do you connect to the Internet on a laptop?

I just got a brand new laptop. It has wireless connections and when I try to log on it gives me a list of networks to choose from. When I brought it outside during my lunch hour (I work in Boston) the list of networks included colleges, and businesses in the area. I couldn't log on using any of the networks because they had private access. Then there was one that said "Public HiFi" or something like that. I tried connecting on that one but I wasn't successful.
Also, if I use the laptop at home, do I have to have my PC on to be able to connect to the internet?

Answer
you don't have to have your desktop on at home to connect to your Internet also if you don't have a wireless modem your laptop may not be able to pick up ur Internet. If you want to take your laptop other places outside i suggest getting a Internet card most phone providers have them. (ie Sprint,T-Mobile,Virzion ext...) I believe you can pick what type of card you would like and you pay for it like a cell phone a certain amount a month. Hope this helps!

What is the best laptop to buy for a student attending college in the fall of 2011?

Dillon Ben

My parents are letting me get a laptop before college. I can spend up to $1000. Maybe a few more hundred. What would be the best bang for my buck?
I was looking at the Macbook Pro but I would only be able to afford the 13". I dont know if this is too small or not.

Answer
Haters gonna hate but i would honestly recommend a macbook pro, this laptop is reliable, wont ever die, has specs that will cover your needs, and if you have a problem, Apple has the best customer support in the business. It is well worth the money. If the MacBook pro is too pricey, a standard MacBook will do just fine.

edit: I have the base 13" model and I think it is the perfect size. It is light and portable and the battery will last me around 7 hours.

My cousin wants a laptop for college, and we're trying to buy him one. I do all online buying for my mom, and neither knows which type would be most useful for school use. HELP!

Answer
You can't go wrong and I personally recommend Dell! There are hidden long-run costs that one does not initially see when you purchase a Notebook PC other than Dell, HP or IBM and later encounter difficulties or attempt buying replacement parts like a battery, or say a keyboard etc.

Also since you're buying for college then I do NOT recommend a Notebook PC bigger than 15.4" bec we have 3 DELLs incl a larger 17" Notebook PC and the larger ones are nice but much too heavy to lug around campus as well as too big for lecture hall desks in college...

I mentioned we own 3 Dell Notebook PCs and why I recommend DELL, HP or IBM for those living in the United States is that those 3 particular PC Notebook manufacturers literally supply all the business Notebook PCs to the major corporations and Government so replacement parts are readily available esp on EBAY at even a more reasonable price than the manufacturer website. Thus in the long run, being able to get the exact replacement part extends the life on your investment.

FYI my 1st Notebook PC was Gateway bec I couldn't afford Dell at the time and what a mistake is was when I needed to purchase a new Notebook battery <= costly bec not readily available like Dells... and FYI I also ran into a similar problem when attempting to upgrade the memory.

Note if you are looking for DELL bargains, then visit their DELL OUTLET site...

Hope the Above Info Helps!
