Best laptop for a college bound student?

Shaniqa

I don't want a chromebook, and I can't afford a macbook. I'm looking for a laptop that is around $200-$350. I don't play games but I want to be able to watch movies and surf the web, the usual teenage stuff.

is this laptop worth the money?

Answer
i am gonna recommend this laptop. it will work just fine for you.however,i would go to your college IT department and see if they will install win 7 for you free or a small fee(like ten bucks), win 8 is a disaster and you dont want to have to deal with the issues, as far as that laptop, the processor is a year older than the processor in the laptop i recommended,. in addition, the laptop you recommended is dual core, the one i recommended is quad core. quad core is better for multi tasking,as in having multiple programs and tabs within programs. contact me if you need more help. jdbj32m@yahoo.com

Allow me to save some space and links by not repeating a lot of the same information.
In this answer, I discussed and linked to information about CPU, graphics, and quality:

That is despite whether a person's favorite brand is considered good or bad. Truth gets a thumbs down every now and then.
Rescuecom issues occassional industry quality reports, and PCWorld does an annual survey.
Within a laptop brand, they have their own tiers.
High to low
Lenovo Thinkpad and then Ideapad and then Essentials
HP Probook, Elite, Envy, and then Pavilion
Dell has Latitude, XPS and Precision as their good ones, and then Inspiron.
All Acer-Gateway is questionable
Sony cheap laptops are not good but their expensive ones are OK
Samsung's new ATIV 2 is their new consumer low end, but the rest of the product line is generally excellent.
Asus is simple to understand, the more they cost, the better they are. Their under $400 is low grade, but as you go up in price they do a better construction.
Toshiba business line is excellent, but Satellites are not rated well.

In Photography, you should try to afford a 1080p display.
You need to offer a price point and whether battery life and weight are important factors.
If you can afford it, Lenovo Y510p with a 1080p display at about $1000 is impressive.
Google Lenovo Student Portal, and Lenovo Barnes and Noble Gold for a small discount.
$655 (plus tax in CA, TN, NJ) for a Sony with a low voltage i5 and 1080p display would be nice

Even though only HD 4000, the 1080p display is a big plus to photography.
If trying to go as cheap as possible but still good, look for a Samsung with i5-3210M, and a decent graphics card would be a big bonus.
$580 Samsung - No optical drive

$770, a Toshiba Satellite with a quad core Haswell i7, GT 740M graphics card, but a standard display

New Laptop for College-Bound student?

lolaurence

Hey guys, I'm going to graduate soon and for a graduation present my mom is giving me a $500 limit on a brand new laptop.
What's the best laptop I can get out there within the price range.

Keep in mind that this laptop must be able to suit my needs:
Lots of music, pictures and videos
Networking (ex. Myspace, Aim, Yahoo, Windows Live)
School Work (ex. Big papers, powerpoints, spreadsheets)
Decent battery life

I prefer a Windows system, but if there's a good Mac out there that'll fit these needs, then by all means PLEASE let me know.
Thanks yahoo!
-Laurence

Answer
Hell Laurence,
If your mom is providing you with $500, then why don't you better wait for some few more days and ask for $500 more so that you can buy a good Dell laptop in that price. The price of the technology and the electronics goods are decreasing every day, so I think it would be a prudent decision if you can wait a bit longer and then buy a brand new hunk laptop.

As far as your choices are concerned -- the one that you have mentioned; I think you will get all those features in that price. But if you are in hurry, then you can buy a laptop at that price. You will get all those features you have mentioned. Those are the basic features of any computer. So, any computer can have at least those features. You do not need to worry about it, dude.

Wish you all the best with your new laptop.

Rajesh Chaudhary

What are some good laptops for engineering college students?

Brandon

Here are my requirements:
-Windows 7
-A intel core i5 or i7 processor
-At least 6GB ram
-At least 500GB hard drive
-Wireless Networking

I am looking for something that would work for my next 4 years in college. If you don't really know about engineering school, there are some programs that take a lot of ram and need a decent graphics card, so it can't be a piece of shit. If it meets the requirements it should work good though. I am looking for something in the $500 - $1,000 range, but definitely under $1,500. I can get some pretty good discounts on Dell, HP, and Lenovo computers through my school so those are the preferred brands. I also would prefer a full keyboard and something that has at least a 15 inch screen. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Answer
Hey, that is a great question, thanks for coming to answers, I hope this information helps.

Most reliable laptop brands: the results

Apple tops the list, as might be expected from such a premium PC builder. Apple products are far from cheap, but they do offer a quality experience. Runner up Dell has a very different business model. It, like other high-ranking brands HP and Asus, operates as a volume laptop maker, selling many thousands of laptops every week. We would expect to see them, and Lenovo, high up in our list because they sell so many PCs: but their higher ranking suggests a lot of satisfied customers.

Apple: 19%
Dell: 12%
Asus: 11%
HP: 11%
Acer: 9%
Lenovo: 9%
Toshiba: 9%
Samsung: 7%
Sony: 6%
Alienware: 3%
Fujitsu: 1%
MSI: 1%
Panasonic: 1%
I do not agree with this. But this was the results of a large survey...

That is a great question, hope I was able to help. Good Luck...

I have a Gateway M-7301U Laptop computer and well when I plug my power cord in it doesn't charge and basically does nothing. It isn't my power cord I have tested it on other computers and it works fine, it has to be the power port. I have no idea what to do how to fix it or even where to take it. I am a college student and I need my computer for school so I need to what could be wrong and how much is it going to cost me to get it fixed.

Answer
I would try for a solution at your college first if you have a computer class there. A lot of dealers will try to rip you off. But there are a lot of good experts here on answers and i am sure you will get an answer. Have you tried searching for simular questions in the search for questions bar above. I use it a lot and usually get good results. EG ~~

What's the best type of laptop computer to buy?

Tricia A

I'm a college student with several online classes. I need a fast computer with good memory that can read/write disks and play dvd's and music. Aside from work, I also want it to be good for entertainment, but I don't need it for computer games. What's the best type/brand of laptop to buy, which won't make me go broke?

Answer
Its not the brand of laptop you buy like "Sony" or "Apple" but its whats inside it. When buying a laptop look for (Ram) and Hard Drive space. A good laptop for college would be a laptop with 1GB Ram and 80GB to 150GB. Hard Drive is the aount of memory for your computer and Ram is the amount of memory while your computer is running. For example (for the Ram) I have Aim Yahoo and "LimeWire" Each one of those uses memory while the computer is on, If i had a low amount of Ram my computer would be going slow. So Ram make laptops and desktops go quiker and Hard drive is memory for all those college assinments.
I hope this helps and Remeber its not about the Brand but whats inside..

Good luck.
