What's a good laptop for a prospective college student?

I will be going to college in the fall of this year, so I'm planning to buy a laptop. I need some recommendations for a typical college student. I'm going to be majoring in economics or business. Other than school work, I will be using the laptop for internet surfing, watching videos, and downloading music, no gaming. Would a macbook pro be worth getting even though it costs around $1700? If not, what would be a great pc model? All of your answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I suggest waiting until you've decided which university to attend. Some will require a laptop, and recommend a specific brand. Many universities and colleges have made deals with companies so you can save a few hundred dollars on a particular brand and get cheap software (but that usually only applies to one operating system).

I desperately need a new laptop. Mine is a refurbished Dell Latitude D600, and it is falling apart (keys are falling off... the monitor is about to fall off, ect.) I'm about to head into my second year of college and was wondering what would be the best laptop for a college student? I'm open to any suggestions. Mac, Dell, ect.

My suggestion would be find a replacement on ebay, it will hold you over until you graduate and then you can get a nice, expensive model
I know a company that I purchased a Dell, IBM and HP from in the past year (all work great and were in better than described condition)

Im a new college student and i need a nrw good laptop. I need one tht is fast and one that can store alot of stuff. Im looking to spend around 300-400 on one. I dont want a used one. It must b new. It has a mic and webcam built in, and the keyboard is kinda like the macbook except the keys are more rounded a bit. It came with Windows 8 (not pro) but it's enough. Anyway's I'd say check either bestbuy.com or your local store as I didn't now about the Dell Deal untill I walked in the store. (: I'm sure you can find a decent one online for $300.

Okay, here's the deal. Christmas is coming and my mom wants a laptop.
Problem is, being a college student, I have a budget.

She uses it mostly for games (Sims 2 & 3 and also Zoo Tycoon 2... and maybe whatever else she thinks she needs on there). And those take up a lot of memory. Otherwise, she uses the computer for the internet surfing.

So if I'm to buy a computer for her, how much memory and hard drive do you think I need? And will it be expensive?

You might want to go with this one here while the offer still lasts. I wouldn't say that it is a high-end laptop, actually far from high end. It all depends on what you will need it for. If I had the money, this is what I would of bought. It is not that bad for $399. However, the offer will expire soon..

What's the best student credit card I should apply for, for building credit?

I'm a 21 year old college student and I've had a Bank of America checking & savings account since I was 17. It's time for me to get a credit card and I've doing some research and I am unsure how to make a final decision. I initially went on BofA & checked out their offers and then I searched "Best Credit Cards for College Students" and "Worst Credit Cards for College Students" & read some articles. Some articles state how rewards programs aren't the most important for student credit cards but then they compare and put emphasis on different rewards programs between different card companies and now I'm stuck. I don't really care about rewards programs but those articles makes me feel like I should... I really paid more attention to the APR rates, interest rates & penalties, all the fine print stuff. I'm a financial responsible person so I'm not too worried about penalties because I know the importance of building a good credit score and MAINTAINING it since my father has the worst credit ever and is financially irresponsible...(so I definitely know I will never follow in his footsteps, it's not even an option). I just need help on what's the "catch" with student credit cards and on whether I should just apply for a BofA one since it's I have my debit card with them... From the articles I read, the "Discover It" credit card for students was ranked #1 on every list while BofA wasn't ranked on any list. But the rankings put emphasis on rewards programs... Are rewards programs really a big deal (especially for a college student)? Plus I don't really spend much to earn points and really wouldn't want to begin spending more to earn special points or cash back. I just want to build up good credit score, thats all. My first purchase will be a laptop in which I have no problem paying it in full cash but it would be smarter just to pay if off on credit. *Sighhh* I'm just trying to get some assistance in filtering out the bull-ish with these terms and conditions of these credit cards... PLEASE HELP!!!

I am a college student looking for a laptop with good wireless internet connection and a decent battery life. I would mainly use the laptop for Internet and Word documents. I want a reasonable price and don't really need that many bells and whistles.

There is really no BEST laptop brand from ANY company as these manufacturers all have produced "Gold" and "Lemons" in their time.

Most answers will tell you to buy "THIS" or "THAT" brand because it is the best, just remember that it is the best for THEM not for you.

Most people will tell you of a best "brand" but their actual answer is based on the MODEL they have not the entire brand and you should not judge a company by ONE model as they make hundreds of them.


This being said, here is how to do more precise research to find the best one for YOU:

The first step is to get information on the laptops that you are interested in and, as a second step, to search online at web stores (like Amazon or similar) or at retail shops (BestBuy, staples or similar) for the best deals on the ones you would really like to have based on your search.

This way, you get the best working laptops at the best prices.


As laptop specs change often, it is good to get non-vendor/non-partisan/non-groupie information so you should do some checking on these review/guide sites to help fine tune your search.

At each site, start by checking models and then compare them with others (or against each other) by choosing different options using boxes and drop down menus to customize the search and get what you want in your laptop ( there is even a way on some of those sites to look by inputting the price you are willing to pay to minimize the impact on your wallet ).
