I am at UMSL in Missouri. out of every 10 people, 9 use backpacks and one uses a laptop case. Backpacks are pretty essential in college.

They are powerful, durable, compact and stylish machines with notable tech support--albeit with a somewhat inflated price tag. Expect to pay 15 to 20 percent more for a Mac than for another laptop with similar power. The presence of OSX, rather than Windows, also has its own advantages and disadvantages. Many users love the intuitive and artistic nature of OSX, while others will be turned off by its superfluous presentation and reduced compatibility.

HP/Dell/Gateway: These machines are all very similar in construction and quality. They tend to be low- to midrange laptops with good prices. Visit a store to check out these products in person before making a purchase--especially the cheaper models. Their construction can sometimes be flimsy, which will be a major problem when carrying them around in a backpack.

Sony Vaio: Laptops by Sony tend to be higher-quality products with a much higher price tag. A user who wants a good machine without dealing with Macs and OSX should consider a Vaio

I just bought a laptop a week ago. What are the top five accessories that would be a practical buy seeing that I am a college student? And please list at least five and it would be nice to know why they would be the most practical too.

In terms of extra gear you might want to consider:
1. A Mouse (Possibly wireless. Logitech v450 Nano)
Nowadays, the battery life is very good. If you get some of the new laser mice (not to be mistaken with optical mice), you won't need a mousepad since they work on pretty much any surface. I tried it on pure white printer paper; it worked fine. Using the mouse is much easier than navigating the touchpad.

2. Earphones/PCI Express Sound Card
Buy some earphones for when you want to enjoy your music without speakers. I have to tell you, though, not to buy a "ultra high quality super expensive" sets because the Laptop sound card is pretty basic and doesn't give you the top-notch sound. You might have great earphones, but the computer can't do much with a mediocre sound card. If you want great sound, you should invest in a PCI Express Sound Card (Creative Soundblaster is a good brand).

3. Antivirus/Microsoft Office/Other Software
These are always nice to have. If you need to type something up, you have Office there ready for you. Antivirus makes your computer safer by keeping bugs, viruses, and spyware out of your system. Also, if you look online, there are a lot of nifty media software and tools out there if you need them. Be sure to ask someone who knows a bit about what software is safe before you install.

4. A Printer
Sometimes, you just need some directions or a sheet of work printed out. Usually, you can just plug your old printer in and it will work fine.

5. External Hard Drive (WesternDigital MyPassport [250GB to 500GB])
These are pretty much drives that are the size of a 3x5 index card but stores at least 62x more data than your little 4GB USB flash drive, even though it works the same way. Great little item that's not that expensive - a great place to backup your data or have a little extra space for whatever you need. If you don't need quite that much space, a regular thumb drive works fine.

6. Carrying Case
If you find a nice backpack or bag, it would serve well as your carrying case. Plus, a backpack has a ton of extra pockets for everything else you might bring with you (like mouse, power cord, flashdrives, etc.)!

7. Backup/Upgraded Battery
If you don't think you'll be around power plugs often, then you might consider getting an extra/the upgraded battery so that the laptop will last longer.

Other notes:
You don't really need a cooling pad if you're not going to be playing games. It should be fine as long as you make sure you don't cover the fan opening while you use it.
I'm not sure what the best wireless router would be, but Linksys makes very good routers. You might want to check them out. Even so, it may be even more reliable and faster if you just get an ethernet cable and plug your laptop in the way you would plug in your desktop computer.

What is the best rolling backpack or laptop case for someone with a 17 inch laptop and many heavy textbooks?

I am a college student with degenerative disc disease and need a heavy duty rolling bag of some sort that will accommodate my 17 inch Toshiba laptop and many heavy books. It must be able to stand up to rolling across concrete sidewalks every day.
