What kind of laptop should I get (im a college student)?

I am a college student and my old laptop is dead!
I need a laptop that will not break my bank. Something thats no more than 500 dollars.
I am an English Education major and I mostly use my computer to write essays and make power points. I am not a big gamer and I dont dowload a lot of music.
Should I get 3gb with 320mb or is that too much, or too little. I dont know what I am doing lol.
I prefer a screen thats 16 or 17 inches but if its a nice computer I will settle for 15 but nothing less.

You won't find anything larger than 15.6" in your price range, unless you happen upon a good recertified model. There are plenty of inexpensive netbooks, but they all have small screens.

3GB RAM is a good choice (maybe your only option at this range). You likely won't fill a hard drive with the work you're going to be doing.

Ask around your school if they have some sort of laptop financial aid.

I think laptop with great design, light and sleek would be best for you. Acer Aspire TimelineX has a sleek design with thickness just about 1". It also has Intel Core i3-370M which would be fine with everyday usage. It's also very portable ,weigh about 4 pounds, and has long battery life as long as 8 hrs. I'm looking for a laptop for school next year (I'm going to be a freshman at the University of Illinois). I found these basic questions to help you guys answer my question :)

Im good with computers. Ok if your worrying about bluetooth at all you can install service pack 2 for windows vista. It comes free. So i went over what you said i think i found a pretty stylish/awsome computer. heres a list of sepcs

I'm going to college next year and need to pick a laptop. I want a toshiba preferably, but what other brands would you suggest. Not dell because i've never had good experience with them. What laptop would suggest? I do plan to do a little gaming with it, but I also write and videos as well. Any suggestions would be nice. (No macs please. I'm trying to stay under 1000)

What kind of gaming are you talking about? You won't be playing Crysis on any laptop under $1000. With that said, here are two decent machines in your budget-

The top one has better battery life and a 13.3" screen but the bottom one has a 14" screen, slightly worse battery life, and is more powerful. Whether you want extremely portable and amazing battery life or good portability and a more powerful computer is up to you.

I'm entering college very soon, but I'm in need of a laptop? What kind of laptop and features do you recommend? And for all you MAC and APPLE lovers, I'm sorry to say that's out of the questions. I simply cannot afford it, no matter what I do. I prefer to keep everything under $1000.

Now from which manufacturer should I get my PC from?
- HP, Dell, or ASUS

HP - Entertainment, Gaming, Work, Online Browsing, Powerful Speed and Performance, plus many other things.. Basically call it an All-In-One PC Manufacturer. Another great benefit is that, they can put all this into portable sized laptops and, furthermore, make those laptops look stylish and great.

Dell and ASUS - They are very similar because they each create PCs separately for each and different categories of PC usage. Meaning, they build one for gaming, one for entertainment, one for work, etc.

-Dell - Dell can overprice many of their products, and is a reason why I would rather go with ASUS. Dell doesn't fail however, I still tend to not like them. If you're looking for an average computer, they're best computer, yet, is their Aspiron 15. You won't need their Alienware.

-ASUS - I like ASUS and HP. ASUS can make great computers and they can even make All-In-One PCs too, depending on how you treat their computers. They do make great gaming laptops, great entertainment PCs, laptops used for only work, or they can make all-in-one's, but not as great as HP. ASUS's gamings laptops, are built with many great parts in the market to give you a great gaming experience, for why they call their gaming laptops Gaming Laptops.

So, now that you got the info on the manufacturers.
Go and look for that right PC just for you.

Now with Windows 7's release, required specs may have changed and I will give them to you:

Minimum:

Memory - 3 GB RAM (4 GB Recommended)

Hard Drive - 250 GB RAM (320 GB + Recommended)

Processors - Any Intel Processors that rate over 3 stars. This includes the:

I would have to go with the iPad you can type your papers using the pages app by Apple, HD Video for crystal clear video calls through Skype, you can even buy a keyboard for it if you want to type on a real keyboard, and with iOS 5 you don't even need a computer to set it up, It also includes an HD screen and starts at 499

The only computers that are under 500 are netbooks. If a regular computer is don't expect it to last long, netbooks have crappy proccesors little ram, and really small screens. a computer under 500 won't last to long traveling across campus with all the hard drive shaking, skypeing on a netbook will be terrible because the crappy processor. but if you only need to read emails and type, a netbook may work. Because you are in college though I'm sure you will get interested in computer games, and watching movies on your laptop, which a netbook is not good for,

this is a solid computer even though it goes over your budget it is well worth the money and you won't break the hard drive in it due to travel across campus because there is no hard drive, there is a SSD drive which you can shake around all you want and it won't break.

here is another laptop with good ratings its the only laptop that toshiba has that is under 500 it may get the job done i would consider a ram upgrade, it is for kids so it has kid friendly stuff preinstalled you can uninstall that though.
