What kind of laptop should I get for College?

ILoveCorma

I was thinking a macbook but I don't know which one

Answer
lemme tell u from my experiences.

U dont need a high-end laptop for college.............believe me.
last year when i was buying mine for college i looked around for the one with the most cutting-edge technology . I got one......and am happy with it. But its heavier and larger than what most people use.

U need a laptop which is light enough to be carried in ur back-pack to anywhere, preferably sleek, having a long battery life and most importantly one with a larger palm-resting space. This is the most ignored feature everyone misses before buying. And afterward they keep on figuring out why their wrists are paining from last nights e-mail writing.

and whatever u buy do not go for the ultimate tiny ones. U will end having ur neck sprained using them for long hours. And dont get those netbooks too. In college u will need something more capable than a netbook. They are very feature poor.

U can buy a 13 inch Mac book pro. Its just superb !!! Provided u r ready to use an Operating system other than Microsoft Windows.............u can venture into the Mac world. Then u have the timeline laptops from Acer. Both these two laptops have excellent battery backup for long hours. But the Apple has got less ports for expansions but its just enough for college students like us. Both are sleek and light, but the Apple one is the ultimate head turner. The Acer ones have a corporate look. Mac OS with Apple's hardware & Acer's laptop with Windows 7, both will give u a bleeding fast interface within an enviable, sleek and useful design. The Acer ones are far far far far cheaper than the mac though.

U also have these Dell Studio Laptops with very beautiful designer skins for free !!! These designer laptops are powerful, portable and affordable !!

So wish u happy laptop hunting. Look for the features I have highlighted. Again they r: Light weight, sleek, portable, not too large, very long battery back-up, large palm-rest and moderate expansion slots (like USB, card-reader,microphone in jack, etc).
Also check the keyboard. Look if they dont get much affected from prolonged typing of long notes. A touchpad locking key in the Acer laptops come very handy for busy hands. Backlit keyboard (found in the mac ones) are very useful in low light conditions.

Dont get obsessed with high-end ones. And I believe its best to stick with the PCs rather than Macs because of these sometimes document interchange problems(though solvable) between your Mac and the rest world's PCs.

what kinds of regrets do you have about the laptop you bought for college?

Tay

is it too big too small to heavy, wish it was lighter color or darker color?
what troubles have you run into/ what should i avoid, what do you like about your laptop& what kind is it?

Answer
i bought mine for college 2 years ago. It was a Dell XPS M140 for about 1k (the cheapest xps they had). When i was shopping for notebooks i wanted something small that i could carry around but was still good. I hate Dells but they were more affordable than say a sony so i just bought it anyway. My biggest regret is not waiting a bit longer to buy because for some reason notebooks became even cheaper. I started to see notebooks with double the ram and hard drives for like $600! I was so blown. But electronics always get cheaper later. I have to buy a new notebook (thats part of my tuition at my new university) so basically the one i have now is going to go to waste. First decide what you will be using your notebook for, will you need more memory, less memory etc? do you need it lightweight for carrying around etc? and buy accordingly. you will always have regrets because something better and cheaper will always come out shortly after, thats how technology works and be prepared to face it. good luck.

What kind of laptop should i buy for college use?

need lots of memory for pics, great battery life and efficiency, and good price...college student
No macs, AMDs, compaqs please.

Answer
I would suggest a MacBook. Being the latest, fastest, and most powerful notebook in the generations of iBooks, they are pretty much all you need! And they have have a built-in AirPort chip, so you can connect to wireless internet at the college if it has a wireless network.

That's what I did, because I'm going to college in the fall and the MacBook looked like the perfect computer! Also, from my own experience (I have the white 13"), a MacBook is remarkably lightweight! It's lighter than a normal textbook! Also, the whole thing is just an inch thick! I really enjoy using the keyboard, too. The MacBook keyboard has an neat, genius simple style, and is easy to get used to!

I remember a long time ago, when I used to use my dad's Toshiba (Windows) laptop. I couldn't stand using the keyboard! Not only did it have a light touch, but for some reason just lying my hands over the keyboard drained the energy out of my hands! I don't know why my hands felt so tired, but maybe it was because of some kind of electricity leaking out of the keyboard and into my hands. Anyway, MacBooks are not like that! Very ergonomic!

MacBooks also have a great battery life and efficiency. Except when I have my high speed wireless internet turned on, it seems to decrease the battery life. Battery life length also depends on what/how much you're doing on your laptop. You should keep this in mind if you plan to use it wirelessly around campus. For example, turn AirPort off when you're not using the internet. Also, plug in the MacBook before you go to bed to make sure it has 100% battery power the next day for college. Of course, when you run out of battery power, you can always plug it in somewhere.

You had better get a protective case for your MacBook (or any other laptop) if you plan on taking it to college, or even out of the house for that matter! The best notebook case I've found so far for Apple notebooks is this one:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=891A0F0F&nplm=TF770LL%2FA

It's on my birthday list! ^_^ Just look at all the great customer reviews!

Also, since you're a college student, you are eligible for a free iPod nano if you buy a Mac! Go here:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/6.RSLID?mco=E998F304&nclm=BackToSchool2006

I took the offer, since I am a college student, and got the new iPod nano! But you have to hurry because it says the offer ends Sept. 16!

I also got a free printer (a really good one too!) but I'm not sure if that offer has passed or not.

Good luck! ;-)

What is the best kind of laptop for a college student?

Q. hello everyone!

I've asked for a laptop for christmas from my mother, but she wants to know what kind because she had no idea! Well, neither do i.

I'll be starting college next September for hospitality management.

Thanks guys! any help is appreciated! :}

Answer
for your needs i would get a basic laptop.i am in environmental science and i use basic laptop, it not only runs office and other basic things but i can play some games like civilization 5. dont buy more than you need, its like a car.if you buy power windows and other things that can be one manually, the more likely something is to go wrong with the car.same goes for a computer. and dont buy a laptop without a dvd drive. thats what an ultrabook is. i have needed my dvd drive a fw times over the last two years for classes. so get a regular laptop. i am gonna recommend this one.it has a basic lower end processor. it iwll work with some games likes sims 3,but the advantages are that it has long battery life and produces lower heat stress. by charging your battery less,it will last longer becuase batteries have a set number of times thay can be charged before they die. contact me if you need more help. jdbj32m@yahoo.com

For college freshmen, what kind of laptop (what brand) would be best, especially for working on college papers and other work?

Answer
some schools have a "deal" worked out with a specific brand and you will get a discount on that type, it you buy it through the school. other than that, brand doesn't matter *that* much, but what does matter is size. It can be nice to have a large monitor, but keep in mind, you'll be carrying that around with you all day.

most important, find a laptop that interests you, then check consumer reviews to make sure that there isn't a trend of problems with that model

Okay I'm going to be a freshman in college this upcoming fall semester and I need some help deciding what kind of laptop I should buy. Something for not an outrageous price. I was looking at different macs and I'm not sure if I should get a macbook or a PC. I'm going to college for civil engineering. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
get a mac book pro because most engineering jobs use a lot editing when it come to building a home or anything that an enginering would do.. has better graphics...

but also check with your intructor to see what he/she would recommend for you to use neither a pc or a mac. i believe sense are on tight bugedet would also recommend apply for financial aid use the money left over for a mac computer.

just for starters highly recommend a pc for college and maybe later on purchase a macbook pro i give you links on my recommendations

get warranty on your computer ok

hope it helps

Q. I'm wondering what kind of laptop is good for a college freshman? I'd prefer PC, not Mac. And I'm not going into a business major, I know sometimes they need specific types of computers to support their programs, but that's not the cases for me. I'm going into environmental engineering.
I'm looking for specific brands and such to look for

Answer
Get the cheapest machine you can get from a major manufacturer with the following stats. Core 2 duo, 2GB of RAM, 120GB HD (5400 RPM) and don't get steered into a machine w/a dedicated graphics card - they give you a lot of power you may not need but will add to the price, weight, size, heat and power consumption.

What are some things i would want in a laptop for college? And what kinds of laptops are best (Macs or PCs) for what i need? I am considering graphic design and fashion design as majors, but I will also be taking liberal arts classes. I also want to use the laptop for things like internet, typing, music, pictures, and the usual. Any advice/suggestions?

Answer
If you are going into graphic/fashion design, you will need / want a laptop with upgraded graphics and processing power. You will likely also want a monitor with high resolution. I'd look for a laptop with:

a discrete graphics card (not Intel HD built-in graphics);
an Intel i5 or i7, or AMD A8 processor (quad core is better!); and
At least 4GB of DDR3 RAM;
laptop screen resolution higher than the standard 1366x768, like 1600x900.

Many laptops fit these criteria; your budget and taste will determine which is right for you!
A few examples (links below): Dell XPS , Asus G73 series, Lenovo ThinkPad T520 or Ideapad Y series.
